VA Tech vs. Wake Forest–In the Groove

#19 Virginia Tech traveled to Winston-Salem, North Carolina Saturday night to face the 4-1 Demon Deacons of Wake Forest.  After the Hokies fell down ten to nothing mid way through the first quarter things were starting to look bleak.  The offense wasn’t in rhythm, quarterback Logan Thomas was late and inaccurate with his passes, and the banged up defense got beat on a 79-yard bomb.  The offense looked to have taken a step back from last weeks shootout against Miami and the defense, down to starters, struggled against Wake Forest’s spread attack.  As it turns out, the Hokies just needed a quarter to warm up.

The Hokies would go on to score 28 straight points (21 in the second quarter) to take the lead, and the game from the Demon Deacons, 38-17.

Another win takes the Hokies to 6-1 (2-1 in the ACC) all thanks in large part to another stellar performance from QB Logan Thomas.  A shaky first quarter gave cause for concern for many Hokie fans; some of those fans had called for Logan’s head after the embarrassing home loss to Clemson.  Now, after consecutive conference wins the Hokies are back in a big way and Thomas has accounted for nine touchdowns in the last two weeks; four rushing, five passing.

Thomas finished the game 17 of 32 for 280 yards and two touchdowns, he also added 30 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground.  RB David Wilson continues to improve and embrace his role as the starting tailback, he finished with 136 yards on only 17 carries, with a touchdown of his own.  And senior WR Jarrett Boykin stepped up in a big way grabbing 7 catches for 147 yards and a touchdown.

This once stagnant-looking offense has exploded over the last two weeks.  Thomas’s improvement is what everyone points to, but the unit as a whole, up front on the offensive line, and the receivers and backs, have all gelled beautifully.  There’s no doubt that to win games in the modern game you have to have the ability to put points on the board.  With Thomas making good decisions and throws, Wilson gashing defenses for big chunks, and the receivers making plays down the field, this Hokie team will compete for an ACC title; something many thought was impossible just two weeks ago, myself included.

The same goes for the play of VT’s defense.  True, they gave up a lot of points and yards to Miami last week, but this week, on the road they held Wake to just 59 rushing yards and 17 points; that’s not bad for a unit that was missing two starting defensive linemen.

Now with two winnable games in front of them, BC next week then Duke, the 6-1 Hokies have momentum and confidence.  If all goes well they’ll be 8-1 and 4-1 in the ACC when they travel to Atlanta to take on the no longer unbeaten Yellow Jackets, who lost a shocker to UVA on Saturday.

The ACC is still a Hokie conference, Clemson remains the only unbeaten team, and if they drop a game down the stretch the Hokies will surely take advantage.

But I digress…Good game against Wake, the team will rest up and prepare for Boston College next Saturday.  It’s going to be an interesting second half of the season in the ACC.
