PSU Heads to Northwestern

Miraculously, Penn State has managed to compile a 6-1 record thus far, with its only loss coming against Alabama. It is somewhat unexpected considering the Nittany Lions lost their star receiver (Derek Moye) and are still doing the Quarterback Shuffle ™ more than halfway into the season, however, when you look at their opponents, only the Crimson Tide are anywhere to be seen in the Top 25. PSU, now 21, will again play an unranked team this weekend in the somewhat woeful Northwestern Wildcats (2-4, 0-3 in the Big Ten). This week marks the end of the “gimme” games for Penn State as Illinois and Nebraska come to Happy Valley over the next two weeks before the Nittany Lions travel to Ohio State and then Wisconsin to round out the season. Get while the gettin’ is good!

With the win last week over Purdue and in this day and age, Penn State became bowl eligible. Even if they lose the rest of the their games. Think about that for a second…Joe Paterno is one W away from tying Eddie Robinson’s 408-win mark. Now that is an accomplishment. Making it to a bowl game with a potential .500 record is not.

Expect to see more of the same for the Nittany Lions and another win should be forthcoming, barring disaster, which seems as though it’s not too far from the team bus. Joe Paterno mentioned in his press conference that they were working on their performance in the Red Zone. That would be good to work out before getting to the meat of the schedule.

Northwestern is led by former Allentown, Pa. standout QB, Dan Persa (73 of 98, 700 yds, 5 TD, 2 INT) and Kain Colter on the ground (68 for 370 yards, 5 TD). Once again it will fall to the PSU defense to contain these threats as the Nittany Lion offense has struggled to put up meaningful points.
