Same result, different game – 3-2 loss to Dallas

It is way too early in the season for the Columbus Blue Jackets to have more questions, than answers. Some questions I ponder… When will the CBJ win a game? Will the Jackets find an effective power-play? Will RJ Umberger find his flow? Can the defense stop chasing the puck around in their zone? Will they ever get out of the basement, in the Western Conference? Can they move to the Eastern Conference, NOW? Will Steve Mason make a timely save? Will the team score more than 2 goals, per game?…
Coach Scott Arniel hasn’t been able to mold the new talent together. Heading into tonight’s home game, against the Dallas Stars, the CBJ has scored only 2 goals per game, in their five contests. In addition, they have managed a single point – a penalty shootout loss to the Colorado Avalanche in their last home game.
Tonight was more of the same for Columbus. Another 3-2 loss, this time to the Dallas Stars. It’s odd, really, that the CBJ has scored 2 goals in each of it’s 6 games. It’s been common place, that the opposing goalie has been the number one star in four of their six contests. Sad that Columbus poured 40 shots at Kari Lehtonen, and only gave up 18 shots against.
So where is the chemistry? Why can’t the CBJ create better scoring chances? How can Ott score that goal on the off wing from the face off dot?
It’s frustrating times. But all is not lost…
Derick Brassard proved his worth, playing center on the top line (Nash and Umberger). He was easily Columbus’s best player (PP goal). Mason struggled staying square on Ott’s goal. One he shouldn’t have given up. Jamie Benn scored a goal – All three players around Benn seemed as though they’d let the other player do the work – allowing Benn to sneak in on Mason. But it was Michael Ryder’s tip in shot, in the third period, that sealed the deal – and sealed Columbus’s sixth straight loss.
Dallas, winner of 5 of their first 6, continue to ride the hot hand of Kari Lehtonen, who improved to 5-0-0. Just another goalie who has thwarted the CBJ this year…
