Chiefs Head Into the Black Hole

This week the Chiefs need to avoid the bye week blues.  They have a huge matchup against the rivaled Raiders in Oakland.  The team got some much needed rest and Coach Todd Haley had extra time to put together a game plan.

At the top of that game plan needs to be stopping the Raiders’ run attack.  Of course there has been a great deal of attention directed towards their quarterback situation with the arrival of Carson Palmer, but the Raiders right now have the second best running game in the NFL.  Darren McFadden is off to a hot start and Oakland loves playing smash mouth football.

Carson Palmer is definitely an upgrade from Jason Campbell and clearly their organization does not have faith in Kyle Boller or Terrell Pryor.  Palmer will make this offense well rounded, but I don’t how effective he will be in his first game.  Marinate on this stat: Kansas City has not allowed a quarterback to throw for 300 yards the entire season, yet they have given up 150 points in five games.

Their offense has begun to come alive in the past two games and they’re going to need to put points on the board this week.  Matt Cassel is coming off of a great game in which he threw four touchdowns.  Jackie Battle also broke out for 119 yards and although he was injured the bye week should have helped him recover.

We may still have to wait for the debut of wide receiver Jonathan Baldwin.  Although he’s physically healthy Coach Haley has been reluctant to put him on the gameday roster.  This kid is going to be good, but right now the offense has a good thing going with Dwayne Bowe and Steve Breaston catching balls.

This game is more important than your average regular season game.  For starters it’s a division game and the Chiefs are already 0-1 in the AFC West.  The possibility of reaching .500 and digging themselves out of an 0-3 start should fire up the players even more.  It’s going to be a tough battle, but isn’t it always in the Black Hole?
