VIKINGS CAN’T WIN? THINK AGAIN
Posted By Sean Eckhardt On Oct 21 2011 @ 5:27 pm In Minnesota Vikings | No Comments
The Christian Ponder era officially begins on Sunday when the Vikings host the Green Bay Packers. Logic would tell you that Minnesota has no chance against the team that many consider the best in the NFL. Common sense would dictate that a team that is 1-5 is not going to take down a team that is 6-0. However, when it comes down to Vikings vs Packers, logic and common sense are usually thrown out the window.
These are some facts that will play into the outcome of Sunday’s game:
1. Aaron Rodgers is currently the best quarterback in the NFL. Sorry Tom, but it’s been seven years since you won a Super Bowl.
2. Adrian Peterson is the best running back in the NFL, is pissed off about losing, and has had excellent success against Green Bay throughout his career. In eight games, he has more than 800 yards rushing and is averaging 4.92 yards per carry.
3. Jared Allen is having his best year as a pro. He leads the NFL with 9.5 sacks and is on pace to shatter Michael Strahan’s record of 21.5 set back in 2001.
Allen might be the most important player on the field Sunday. If Minnesota can’t put pressure on Rodgers and get him out of rhythm, they will lose and probably lose big. But if the Vikings defense can put some heat on the Green Bay QB and force some turnovers, they have a chance. The Vikes have been in a position to win every game, with the obvious exception of last week in Chicago.
Peterson will probably have 30 touches on Sunday. If Minnesota gets ahead, that number will go up. As good as Rodgers is, he doesn’t play defense and AP will be running the ball hard. That much is guaranteed.
What does Christian Ponder have to do for the Vikings to win? Don’t turn the ball over. Donovan was ok on the turnover aspect of the game, but he looked like David Carr in the pocket. Sack, sack, sack. Ponder will have to make some plays with his legs, which he certainly has the ability to do.
Will the Vikings win? Probably not. They can win though. They will need a +2 ratio on turnovers, over 100 yards from AP, and some sort of big play. I’m not even talking about offense. Minnesota will need a game-changing play from their defense or special teams to beat the Packers. This all sounds like an illogical scenario, but like I said, when it comes to this 50 year-old rivalry, logic has nothing to do with it.
