Iowa wide receiver Marvin McNutt set the school record for touchdown receptions and helped the Hawkeyes win their homecoming game against Indiana, 45-24.
With his three touchdown receptions, McNutt set a new Iowa record of 24 touchdown receptions, surpassing the previous one at 21. It didn’t take long to do it: McNutt hit it on his first reception of the day with a quick 80-yard run.
Before that, the Hawkeyes jumped on the board first with a one-yard touchdown run by Marcus Coker at the 7:50 mark and near the end of the quarter, Indiana grabbed its first seven points with a three-yard touchdown reception.
They came out strong at the top of the second quarter and it was soon a 14-14 game. No worries, it was all about McNutt today and he took Iowa to another lead with his second touchdown at the 8:10 mark. Coker soon scored his second touchdown.
As most things happen in threes, McNutt got his third touchdown and helped take Iowa to a 35-14 halftime lead.
In the third quarter, each team added a field goal. Iowa entered the final quarter ahead 38-17.
The Hawkeyes got their final score of the day with a touchdown by tight end Brad Herman and the Hoosiers grabbed their last seven points with :50 remaining.
Not only was it a good day for McNutt who finished with six receptions for 184 yards and a career-best three touchdowns, Coker had 23 carries for 139 yards and two touchdowns.
He had some nice assistance from his running back brethren, freshmen De’Andre Johnson (5 carries for 26 yards) and Justin Canzeri (5 carries for 26 yards).
Vandenberg had a good game (sans sacks) going 12 for 16, 253 yards and four touchdowns, which represented a career best.
Indiana brought a true freshman quarterback, Tre Robeson, to Iowa City. He represented the school’s first true freshman to start. Robeson looked good and went 16 for 24, 196 yards and one touchdown.
The Hoosiers used its running game and its versatile quarterback led the team in rushing, going 15 carries for 82 yards. The team’s star running back Stephen Houston didn’t have a second consecutive 100-yard plus game but had 20 carries for 75 yards.
Lucky for Iowa, Indiana’s lead receiver Damarlo Belcher sat on the sidelines today with a sprained knee.
Iowa’s defense continued to show different personalities. They allowed over 400 yards of total offense to the visiting team but twice inside the red zone, they held Indiana from scoring touchdowns. On a third time inside the 20, Indiana had to settle with a field goal.
The Hawkeyes are now 5-2, 2-1 and will travel to Minnesota next week.
