Wings show POWER over Jackets 5-2

The Western Conference has long been considered the POWER conference, for its team depth, skill and speed.  There’s been a weak sister in the power conference, over the last decade - the Columbus Blue Jackets.  See, the CBJ have won 1 game in regulation, in their last 29 games, dating back to last season.  They’ve been to the playoff one time, in their 10 year history.  While the Columbus city council is ready to ink a deal to keep the CBJ from leaving town, some type of change is necessary…

Consider last night’s 5-2 loss to the undefeated Detroit Red Wings (5-0-0).  The Wings took advantage of their power play opportunities, jumping to a 2-0 lead, thanks to Johan Franzen’s two first period power play goals.  Good teams take advantage of opportunities.  In my previous post, I outlined that the CBJ needs a “go to” power play guy… a Johan Franzen type player…Coach Scott Arniel admitted that he built his power play unit for a guy with a “big shot” from the point (Scott Wisniewski)…but the BIG BOYS build it off of screening the goalie, puck movement, and getting players into key scoring spaces.

The Wing’s solid screens caused Steve Mason to look completely lost.  Two goals went in last night, and Mason had no idea where the puck was.  The fourth goal, another POWER PLAY (Detroit had 3 POWER play goals), Mason committed to a screened, tight angle shot, that never happened.  Instead, Valtteri Filppula (1 g, 3 assts – 4 point night) slid the puck to  Nicklas Lidstrom in the slot.  Lidstrom had time to settle the puck and launch a slap shot into a 2/3rds wide open cage…

The CBJ are hurting for points and hurting on the bench.   Radek Martinek left the game in the first period – possible concussion.  Arniel was unsure, as to how long he will be out, but Columbus is already without forward Jeff Carter (broken foot), forward Jared Boll (broken thumb), winger Kristian Huselius (torn pectoral muscle), defenseman James Wisniewski (suspension), and two injured backup goalies.

Last night, the BIG BROTHER got stronger, while the weaker sibling got a ton weaker…
