And the Winner Is

The Panthers did not disappoint their hometown fans this Sunday as they defeated the Redskins in a game made for Carolina Blue victory. The Panthers opening play drive found Cam scrambling the field, (for a pick up 25 yards) not only does he run north and south he runs east and west- WELL! Newton had an arsenal of receiving weapons on the field Sunday. Jeremy Shockey has proven to be an excellent addition to the Panthers offense with his consistence. Jonathan Stewart picked up 14 yards on the drive to get the Panther a 1st and goal. Carolina didn’t score a touchdown on their opening drive but managed to get on the board and strike first.
The Panthers game was plagued with penalties from the start. When it was the Redskins turn to drive the ball, they displayed just how powerful their run game can be and how explosive and beneficial Tim Hightower running the ball is to the Washington game. After a four year hiatus from the game that he loves, John Beck threw his 1st NFL completion down the middle of the field! Not a good look for the defense. The Panthers D did what they do best…gave up yards. James Anderson was able to get his hands on a ball and break-up the Skins passing game and Antwan Applewhite (was a force on the field ALL DAY) got a sack on Beck to get the ball back to the Panthers. Newton was dropped a few times and the Panthers RACKED-UP penalties in the 1st half including a personal foul on Brian Bell and un-sportsman like conduct on Thomas Williams. Carolina’s offense played exceptionally well with Tight-ends blocking, Running-Backs catching passing and Steve Smith doing what he does best-pick up the HUGE 1st downs! Neither team scored a touch down in the first half of the game.
Early in the 2nd half it was apparent that John Beck showed up to win the game and prove that he is worthy of playing QB in the NFL, he completed 23/37 pass attempts, threw a TD, passed a touchdown AND ran for a touchdown himself! (Not bad for his 1st start) Too bad (for Redskins fans) it wasn’t enough to beat the Panthers. Newton and LaFell hooked for a37 yard completion, which set Cam up for his 8th rushing touchdown of the season. Smith and Newton continue to please Panther fans with HUGE passing plays that only Steve Smith can make happen. (Personally I think he should retire as a Panther) Smitty didn’t score a touchdown on Sunday, but he is an enormous contributor to the Carolina victory.
For the first time this season the Panthers did not turn the ball over. A rushing TD by Jonathan Stewart plus the touchdown pass to LaFell the Panthers managed to get their 2nd WIN of the season. The thorn is the Carolina game is penalties and the yards they give, once the Panthers figure out how to minimize that part of their game there is no way they can be beat by any team…including themselves. Congratulations to Chris Gamble for his 25th career interception.
