how ‘E’ kendrick, or is it How? e kendrick?

I learned about the Howard Kendrick fiasco a few days ago, but I needed some time to think about it. A lot of times I just jump the gun, writing on emotion, and frustrations. This time, however, I waited and contemplated what I would write.

The story goes that Kendrick rented a house last season during the Angels season. One young Angels, and Kendrick fan, wanted the 2nd baseman’s autographs. This 8 year old boy waited until Kendrick was moving out before garnering the courage to go up and ask him for his signature. Reportedly, Kendrick said, “It’s not gonna happen” and were rude for asking. It’s sad that you are still standing here”.

The parents were obviously upset that their son was sent home crying, so they reportedly drove by and yelled at Kendrick, “You have kids too, I would think you would never want someone to do that to them.ā€, Kendrick supposedly replied, “Have a nice day”.

STOP! On that alone, Kendrick is a miserable, ego maniac. Having watched Garret Anderson and Troy Glaus walk past kids, and adults many times, so Kendrick’s attitude doesn’t surprise me.

Taking to twitter didn’t help either: I copied this from RADARONLINE.COM [2]. An outside family member of the boys then took to Twitter, blasting the baseball star for making her cousin cry to which he tweeted back, ā€œI guess when people demand you sign and show up with camera in hand Iā€™m supposed to jump. No respect guess it runs in your fam.ā€

Now to the other side of the coin. Mind you, I am NOT taking Kendrick’s side, just trying to let you know that there is another side.

I have worked around Major League Baseball teams for 8 years. Counting my days in local news, it has been longer than that. I have seen fans, adults and children alike, yell some vile, abusive things at players all in the name of an autograph. I have seen players sign for a half hour, with the game starting in minutes, walk away and get abused because they didn’t sign for the rest of the 100 people. I remember a time about 4 years ago, a Sox player signed at least 50 autographs. As the National Anthem was about to play, the player went to the dugout, and the kid yelled, “F you, you F’n jerk. I have been waiting for an hour” Dad, right next to him, egged him on. The player just walked away, with that look of resignation on his face.

Believe me, I am not saying that Kendrick is not a grade A prick, but there are always 2 sides to every story.

I really want to see what the Angels organization has to say about this. If this story is true, they need to sit down with Kendrick and discuss better fan interaction. An apology may be in order, as well. They may do nothing, which wouldn’t surprise me at all either.

The weird thing to me is that Kendrick does a lot of Angel post-game shows, and usually the jerks never do that.

The moral of this story. Stop expecting players to do anything for you or your family. Most of these guys aren’t very smart, and lack any semblance of character. Money corrupts even the best of them, as it does many people in less glamorous positions.

That line in the box score, E:Kendrick, will never sound, or look, the same again.

Go Angels!
