VIKINGS RELEASE OF BERRIAN POINTS TO THEIR BIGGEST PROBLEM

Sometimes when you are writing articles, or just talking sports with others, you can sound like a broken record; “Childress should be fired for his handling of Randy Moss.” “What should concern Minnesota fans is the thought of Sidney Rice following Bevell and Jackson to Seattle.” “Bernard Berrian is not a #1 receiver.” I have said or written all of the above, plus plenty more that echo those thoughts. Today, the Vikings cut Berrian, which at the very least will open up some snaps for other guys.
The Minnesota receiving corps is not devoid of talent. Percy Harvin is a top notch slot receiver when healthy and Michael Jenkins has been a pleasant surprise this year, but I don’t think he’s a #1 guy either. The Vikings have been lacking a true over-the-top threat since Moss was traded to Oakland back in 2005. The team drafted Troy Williamson with the 1st round pick acquired in that trade. He didn’t amount to anything. When Chilly signed Berrian to a free agent contract in 2008, it was for 6 years and $42 million. If you sign a guy to that type of contact, you are not expecting just a serviceable wide-out. Minnesota actually stumbled on to a big time receiver when Sidney Rice exploded in his third year with the team in 2009. After an injury riddled 2010, not just for Rice, but the entire team, he did in fact sign with Seattle shortly after Tarvaris Jackson did.
So now the Vikes are sitting at 1-6 and the season is a huge dissappointment. There are some positive developments though. Christian Ponder looks like he might be, dare I say, a promising NFL quarterback. It’s way too early to get too excited, but he has looked pretty good since taking over for McNabb. Also, it just feels like the team has enthusiasm even though they have struggled to win. Minnesota has been in very competitive in every game with the exception of the game in Chicago.
Which brings us back to the same point. The biggest problem with the Minnesota Vikings is the lack of a big time receiver. If they had one they would have at least 2-3 more wins. Maybe by waiving Berrian, they will open up opportunities for other guys to shine. If nobody stands out, the Vikings will have their #1 priority set for the offseason; a young #1 to put alongside their new QB.
