Two 1st round draft picks square off this Sunday when the Vikings head to Carolina to take on the Panthers.  Both Christian Ponder and Cam Newton entered this season with plenty of people(yours truly included) questioning their value as a high draft pick.  Well Newton seems to be the real deal, and Ponder, while a small sample size, has looked really good.  Both players seem to have a bright future, but what about the Panthers and the Vikings.

This is a game the Vikings should win.  The best player Carolina has is Newton, but his best receivers are tight ends.  Steve Smith has monster numbers so far, but Greg Olson and Jeremy Shockey are more attractive targets at this time.  Plus, Minnesota has been on the verge of beating several very good teams this season and Carolina, while improving, does not qualify as a good team.  The Vikings are a playoff-quality team with a rookie QB and no #1 receiver, but they are better than the Panthers.

Once again, expect Adrian Peterson to carry a huge load for Minnesota.  There is never any question about how hard this guy will run.  AD is the best in the NFL.  Period.  The biggest question for the Vikings in terms of winning this game comes down to the defense and how well they contain Cam Newton.  The Carolina QB reminds me a lot of a young Daunte Culpepper, which should come as a huge complement.  Newton is huge for a QB, fast, strong, and improving with his accuracy at an alarming rate.  Alarming for opposing defenses that is.

Jared Allen and the Vikings D will once again be on the spot.  How well the defense can contain Carolina’s offense, and more specifically their new QB will ultimately decide the game.  Cam Newton has been playing lights out football, yet the team has struggled to win.  Minnesota has just recently switched QB’s due to their struggles.  Sunday, two 1st round draft picks will square off for the first time.  If these two guys are as good as they appear, it should be the first of many meetings.
