STARS DOWN THE DEVIL ON NIEUWENDYK NIGHT

On a night where two of his former teams squared of at the AAC, Joe Nieuwendyk was both honored before the game and pleased after it, as the Stars walked away with a narrow 3-1 win over the New Jersey Devils.
It was a typical Dallas Stars victory, being out shot 32-23 but walking away with the two points regardless. Loui Eriksson opened the scoring not quite 11 minutes in to the game on a nice cycling play by the line that’s been clicking well so far. Jamie Benn dished it to Steve Ott from behind the net, who waited for a circling Loui Eriksson to get open on the far side and fed him a clean pass that Eriksson was able to fire past Johan Hedberg. The Stars forechecked well all period and looked full of energy, though being out shot 11-9.
The Devils came out strong in the second and turned the tide on the Stars, out shooting them 12-4 and tying it up 12 minutes in.
The third period was a little more like the first, with the Stars out shooting the Devils 10-9 and looking like they wanted the win a little more than in the second. Vernon Fiddler scored his second of the season on a wrap-around that banked in and surprised Hedberg. The Devils had a late power play with 1:02 left and the extra attacker as well but Goligoski was able to block a shot that deflected the puck to Souray, who fired it the full length of the ice and in to the open net to seal the victory on Joe Nieuwendyk night and the Stars officially take over first place in the West while pushing their record to 8-3 on the season.
