4th Quarter Comeback Allows Manning, Giants to Escape with Victory, 20-17

If it wasn’t for the Giants fourth quarter comeback, Miami’s “Suck for Luck” might have run out of luck.

Big Blue, despite trailing for most of the game, was able to step up defensively and Victor Cruz’s touchdown reception with five minutes remaining helped the Giants leave Metlife Stadium with a 20-17 win against the winless Dolphins.

New York (5-2) had to rely mostly on their passing game, which has been the norm for the team with the lowest producing rushing offense in the league. Eli Manning continued his improved 2011 campaign (31-45, 349 yards, 2 TD, 0 INT) and carried much of the load for the team.

The Giants only finished with 50 rushing yards combined of Ahmad Bradshaw who did not play much of the second half due to injury and Brandon Jacobs, who returned from injury. On the other side Reggie Bush had his best offensive game all season, rushing for 103 yards for Miami.

The Dolphins (0-6) jumped out to a 14-3 lead in the first half.  Steve Slaton and quarterback Matt Moore both had one yard scores. New York was able to cut the lead before halftime with a Mario Manningham first touchdown reception of the season with eight seconds left to make it 14-10.

After a Dan Carpenter field goal, the Giants defense toughened and finally played like the team that’s currently first in the NFC East. Moore, who looked great on his scoring drives earlier in the game, was maligned by the Big Blue front line. Mathias Kiwanuka, Osi Umenyiora, and the returning Justin Tuck each recorded a sack in the second half and got the East Rutherford crowd back into the game and hoping for a win.

Manning proved again he’s a fourth quarter quarterback, hitting receiver Victor Cruz with a 25 yard touchdown with less than six minutes to play to push the Giants to a 20-17 lead. A Corey Webster interception on the following drive sealed the win for Big Blue. It was the team’s fourth of five wins when trailing in the final quarter, which shows resilience of the captain QB and defense.

After getting out of their post-bye week game with a tight victory, the Giants must refocus on the tough schedule ahead starting in New England next Sunday.
