Chiefs Survive a Scare

It’s not over till it’s over. That’s what the Chiefs and all their faithful fans wanted to believe as the Chargers drove down the field in the final two minutes of the fourth quarter.

Luckily for Kansas City it wasn’t over. San Diego had driven all the way down to the Chiefs’ 15-yard line and it looked like they were just trying to get the ball to Nick Novak’s preferred hash mark. But the kicker never had a chance to win the game. Philip Rivers some how found a way to fumble the snap and the Chiefs’ Andy Studebaker came up with the recovery.

As overtime began you could just feel that all the momentum was on the Chiefs’ side of the ball. The defense forced a three and out on the Chargers opening drive and then Matt Cassel went to work. He drove the offense all the way down inside the Chargers’ 20 to set up a game-winning 30-yard field goal from Ryan Succop.

Down the stretch Cassel looked poised and in control. He struggled to find a rhythm at the beginning of the second half, but then rallied the troops in the fourth quarter and overtime. It looks like he found a nice connection with rookie Jon Baldwin, who caught five passes for 82 yards including a 39-yard touchdown.

Overall it was a pretty sloppy game by both teams. Each squad turned the ball over four times. Although each quarterback looked great at times, they each threw two interceptions and lost a fumble.

The Chiefs were able to get a ton of pressure on Rivers and it forced him to make mistakes. Tamba Hali was in the backfield all game and came up with two huge sacks. Brandon Flowers played tough defense on the Chargers’ receivers and Kendrick Lewis and Derrick Johnson were the ones with the interceptions.

At the end of the day a win is a win. The Chiefs have now won four in a row and are tied atop the AFC West. Football isn’t a pretty game and on Halloween night these two teams proved that.
