Erick Aybar’s glove is now made of gold

I remember a few years ago I interviewed Orlando Cabrera when he was a member of the Chicago White Sox. In a conversation, off camera, I asked him about Erick Aybar. His response surprised me. He said that he felt he was a good fielder (He did win a Gold Glove with the Halos back in 2007), but he felt Aybar was better.

We can’t say that Aybar is better, but he at least as good as Cabrera. Major League Baseball feels the same way, awarding Aybar his first Gold Glove. Aybar became the 3rd Angels shortstop to win a GG, following Jim Fregosi and Cabrera.

Aybar had a breakout season defensively. The Dominican Republic native fashioned of .980 fielding percentage, tied for third among AL shortstops, by committing just 13 errors in 659 total chances. He tied for the AL lead by being involved in 102 double plays, and he made 142 starts, spanning 1,262 innings (Thank’s MLB.COM).

Aybar was always a guy who would make a incredible play followed by a bone head play on a routine grounder. Not in 2011. Aybar made plays nightly that were of the mouth open, no way did he do that variety.

Not knowing what new GM Jerry Dipoto thinks, Aybar should be a fixture at shortstop for the next few years.

ADD ON: I received a comment from one guy from www.morebaseball.com [1] that I thought was interesting. It was a comment directing me to the site showing me the gloves all the Gold Glove winners used. I found it interesting, so I figured I’d cut and paste it for you:

C – Matt Wieters, Orioles Rawlings PROSCM20 $239.98 Baseball Express
1B – Adrian Gonzalez, Red Sox Rawlings PROSTX23 Discontinued Rawlings Gear

CF – Jacoby Ellsbury, Red Sox Rawlings Pro H Web n/a n/a Pic
RF – Nick Markakis, Orioles Rawlings 1 Post, 2 Bar n/a n/a Pic

I figured out one thing, if you are looking for a glove, Rawlings appears to be the way to go.
7 of the 9 AL winners used a Rawlings glove. Very interesting.

In any other year, Torii Hunter may have joined Aybar, but since MLB now awards Gold Gloves by outfield positions, Hunter was beaten out, rightfully so, by the Orioles Nick Markakis.

Hunter has already won 9 Gold Gloves, but his 10th would have given one for every finger. There’s always next year.

Go Angels!!
