PSU’s Good, Bad and Ugly

Posted By Stephanie Geosits On Nov 5 2011 @ 4:14 pm In Penn State | No Comments

First the good news – PSU (8-1, 5-0) beat Illinois 10-7 last week in the waning moments of the game to somehow head into this bye week as the only unbeaten in the Big Ten in conference play. The Nittany Lions’ only loss of the year was to Alabama – not too shabby if you haven’t watched the games.  Derek Moye came back unexpectedly from a foot injury to help lead Penn State to victory.

The bad news – next up on the schedule: Nebraska at home, followed by Ohio State in Columbus and Wisconsin in Madison. This won’t be an easy road for the two-quarterback team, but JoePa doesn’t seem too bothered by it. He’s sticking to his guns and playing both Matt McGloin and Rob Bolden, even though the latter has been completely ineffective.

Finally, the truly ugly. According to wire reports Saturday, former defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky, an architect of “Linebacker U,” was charged with numerous offenses including seven counts of involuntary deviate sexual intercourse, eight counts of corruption of minors, eight counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and seven counts of indecent assault for his alleged targeting of eight boys/young men over a period of 15 years, beginning in 1994.

Additionally, AD Tim Curley and Penn State vice president for finance and business Gary Schultz, were charged Saturday with perjury and failure to report in an investigation. They are expected to turn themselves in Monday in Harrisburg, according to the attorney general’s office. Schultz oversees the university’s police department as part of his duties and some of the incidents allegedly took place on PSU grounds.

For a program that has consistently prided itself on exceptional conduct this is truly disgusting. Obviously Sandusky, Curley and Schultz cannot be presumed guilty but the fact that the case has gotten this far indicates to me at least that there was something going on. This is horrible news during a season that was turning out to be a pleasant surprise.
