Saints Defeat the Bucs 27-16

After losing to the Rams 31-21 last week, the New Orleans Saints came back and defeated the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They were truly embarrassed after last game, and that embarrassment provided them with a lot of motivation for the game this week.
One week after a degrading loss against the previously winless St. Louis, the Saints maintained its hold on the NFC South lead with a hard-hitting defense in a 27-16 victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. After a disappointing loss last week they wanted to make sure everything that went wrong last week went right this week. The Saints did just that in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome Sunday.
New Orleans quarterback Drew Brees passed for 258 yards and two touchdowns this week. Many Saints players were happy when coach Sean Payton’s decided to hand baseball bats as motivational props leading up to the game. It will probably be a ritual now, as he wants to challenge his team to play with a stronger physical presence.
Some of the players felt like they were about to play a playoff game, and the excitement was very high. They knew they needed to take care of business, and in order to do that they could not play around.
Despite not having Saints’ linebacker Jonathan Vilma due to a sore left knee, and also losing starting corner Tracy Porter to a neck injury early in the game the Saints held Tampa Bay without a touchdown. That was until Bucs’ quarterback Josh Freeman threw to Kellen Winslow with 5:33 left.
The defense started early in the game when they tackled Bucs’ running back LeGarrette Blount and safety Roman Harper stripped the ball. The game maintained scoreless, but the Saints of course later took the lead.
Brees’ scoring passes went for 3 yards to Lance Moore and 21 yards to Darren Sproles, whom the Bucs could not stop. Pierre Thomas of course added a tackle-breaking 9-yard touchdown.
Tampa Bay was penalized nine times for 80 yards. Brees extended his NFL record of consecutive games with 20-plus completions. He now has 3,004 yards passing, making him the first NFL player to cover 3,000 in the first nine games of a season.
The offense did not allow Brees to get sacked this time after being sacked six times last game against the Rams. With the victory against Tampa, New Orleans remain a half-game ahead of Atlanta (5-3) in the NFC South. Tampa Bay dropped into third place.
The Saints will travel to Atlanta for this Sunday’s game to take on the Atlanta Falcons. This is another game that will determine who will be on top in the NFC South.
