Secrets of success…

So far, the losses have mounted high for Scott Arniel and the Columbus Blue Jackets. The CBJ’s 5 points leave them as only team with single digit point totals (all other NHL teams have 10 or more points). It’s no secret that the CBJ can’t score goals and it’s no secret that the Jackets start slow (worst in goals allowed in the first period), and can’t dig themselves out of early first period deficits. It’s also no secret that the Jackets have had the injury bug since pre-season… I won’t mention goaltending…
So what’s the secret the CBJ brass is keeping? Why aren’t sweeping changes occurring to try to right this ship, save the season, and gain back some fan support?
The answers are multi-fold – BUT, the reality is simple….
General Manager, Scott Howson, would admit failure by firing Scott Arniel and/or making a huge trade. In kind, President Mike Priest would admit failure, if Howson and Arniel are let go… politics at it’s finest.
Such corporate politics make it difficult to make a move. It’s not about saving face, at this point, it’s about direction. Do they fire people? Trade players? DO NOTHING? Someone needs to lead the charge and create lasting change!
If firing the coach is the answer, now is the perfect time to relieve Arniel of his duties. The CBJ are in the middle of a open schedule (4 games in 13 days). So, does no quality NHL coach want to take the job?
I’ve talked with ex-CBJ players – MOST love it when they are traded away. Many find success elsewhere. MOST would LOVE to live with their families here in central Ohio… but all I’ve talked to, have little good to say on how the CBJ is run.
It’s a tough gig to establish a winning culture after 10 years of ambiguity and futility… Look, CULTURE is tough to breed when there is no accountability. Oddly, history and consistency help to build CULTURE. However, a winning attitude, a fighting spirit and getting guys to do what they think they can’t do – is called leadership. Without LEADERSHIP, the CBJ will never develop the right culture.
Where are the CBJ lacking in leadership?
Leadership, expectations and accountability start at the top of the house. It’s fostered in the locker room, and demonstrated on the ice… do the math…
So given the time to prepare, which team will rebound tonight? Chicago comes in losers of 3 straight. Columbus is coming off an embarrassing 9-2 loss to Philadelphia. I will go against the grain…this will be a slow paced, chess match with Chicago winning 2-1. Takers?
