The only positive news to come out this week around the Penn State sexual abuse scandal is that a group of PSU alumni have formed #ProudPSUforRAINN, with the goal of raising $500 thousand to support the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network. Check out: http://rainn.org/ProudPSUforRAINN for more details. In a little over 24 hours, they have raised $100 thousand. If everyone in the stands tomorrow gave just $1, that would be over $100 thousand more – just saying.
This, to me, represents what Penn State is about; not the band of idiots vandalizing the campus on hearing that Joe Paterno was fired. I will write more about that later.
Friday’s usual pep rally is being supplanted by a candlelight vigil for the victims as well, and students are collecting donations for #ProudPSUforRAINN in the HUB.
For the record, the people calling for PSU not to play this week, or the rest of this year, or next season – such as a highly uninformed Canadian sports editor (read: hockey writer), and a couple of academics who want to ban college football forever and are jumping on this opportunity to try to advance their cause – are wrong. This is not a football scandal. This is a moral and ethical crisis. But again, more on that later.
The current Penn State Nittany Lions Football Team has done nothing wrong. I hope that the players will carry themselves with class and dignity, as they have in the past. They have a tremendous opportunity to remind people of why they love and support the Penn State Nittany Lions and with the help of #ProudPSUforRAINN, what it really means to be a Penn Stater.
