The Pittsburgh Penguins showed us exactly why they’ve been winning games without Sidney Crosby. From coach Dan Bylsma, to each five man unit on the ice, down to Marc Andre Fleury, they sure don’t give you much room.

The Stars managed just 17 shots on net all night in a 3-1 loss to the Pens in a battle of the two conference leaders in Pittsburgh last night, and the Stars’ usual offensive leaders up front managed just eight shots combined. Mike Ribeiro and Loui Eriksson each fired four of those shots while Jamie Benn, Brenden Morrow, Michael Ryder were held off the stats sheet other than a couple minor penalties.

Eric Nystrom continued his hot streak, opening the scoring late in the first period with his 5th goal in ten games for the Stars since being aquired from Minnesota. The Stars were playing a typical road game, scoring the first goal with not many shots on net and keeping the Penguins to limited chances. James Neal eventually found the score sheet late in the second for the Pens as they kept pressing the Stars who were unable to mount much of an attack.

James Neal of all people scored the winner in the third, getting lucky with his attempted nifty cross-crease pass being deflected in off of a reaching Mark Fistric’s stick in front of a wide open net. Neal made the play happen though and played well all night. Matt Cooke added the insurance with a successful penalty shot just two minutes later and that was all she wrote for the Stars.

Alex Goligoski left the game after taking a puck to the hand and Philip Larsen will be in the lineup in Detroit tonight to take on the Red Wings. The Stars will need a little more jump tonight if they plan on capping this so far successful road trip off on a high note.
