OPPORTUNITY TO STEP UP

The difference between good teams and bad teams is how quickly they can pull themselves out of a slump. The Stars sat atop the NHL’s standings before last week’s game in Pittsburgh with a giant start to the road trip, winning the first two games in Carolina and Washington in convincing fashion. All of a sudden two losses to end the road trip in Pittsburgh and Detroit and things weren’t so peachy. No big deal, right ? Return home, take a few days off to re-group, hit the ice to play the Panthers and get things turned around, right ? Wrong.
Tuesday’s game at home vs the Panthers was an important game. It was a chance to show that they were one of those good teams that can shake off a couple losses and leave them in the dust. You would want a good team to come out strong in a game like that and that’s what we all expected, but it didn’t happen in the least. It was a brutal effort on all accounts. Losing 6-0 on home ice is unacceptable if the Stars expect to be taken seriously and expect to be one of those “good teams”.
Tonight’s game is in Colorado, a team that forced the Stars to score seven times to pull out a victory just two weeks ago. The Avs are slumping winning just two of their last seven and have struggled at home so far, winning just two of eight. No game is easy though, especially if you play how the Stars did the other night. Should they bring that effort, they will find themselves on a four game losing streak and coming home to play the Sharks Saturday night, which is never an easy team to play.
It’s time for the team as a whole to pick up the slack, and it’s time for the big boys like Jamie Benn, Loui Eriksson, and Brenden Morrow to lead the charge out of this slump. It’s just what good players on good teams do.
