YPSILANTI —- Back in the day when FM radio was something of a luxury, Uncle Mel listen to the band Three Dog Night and their song title “One” a classic song done by a classic band of the 1970’s.

Eastern Michigan University needed just one defensive play, one defender to make a play instead the Eagles still need one more victory to become bowl eligible.

Last Saturday, November 19, 2011, Eastern Michigan University felt the disappointment of a 28-22 defeat against Kent State University at Dix Stadium in Kent, Ohio.

“We are going to regroup and we play in six days so we will be ready to play in six days,” Eastern Michigan University football coach Ron English said. “We made too many mistakes to win the game. We fumbled the ball and we had untimely penalties.”

The Eagle defense failed to make just one play, the Golden Flashes made one play a 70 yard touchdown pass, a mental lapse or a defensive breakdown, the result was too much for the Eagle offense too overcome.

With 6:22 left in the fourth quarter, Kent State University quarterback Spencer Keith waited long enough for wide reciever Tyshon Goode to make one move, leaving one defensive back grasping at nothing but air and the pattern open up and the end result a 70-yard touchdown.

Keith finished the game with 11 completions for 173 yards.

Eastern Michigan University tailback Dominique Sherrer showing signs of over coming a nagging ankle injury carried the ball 24 times for 136 yards, he is the first ball carrier to run through the Kent State defense for more than 100 yards this season.

The Eastern Michigan University ground game is ranked 13th in the nation and quarterback Alex Gillett threw for 84 yards and two touchdown passes, one area of the Eagles added an unexpected contribution – the special team scored a touchdown for the Eagles.

Eagle wide receiver and punt return specialist Demarius Reed in the third quarter took a Kent State University punt 83 yards for the score.

Leaving the fate and the result of the game into the collective hands of the improving defense of the Eagles and asking for the defenders for the Eagles just one stop against the Golden Flashes.

English is now preparing his team to play one more game, the season final game against a team that embarrassed the Eagles last season 71-3 at Rynearson Stadium.

Last year’s game had nothing on the line for either team, one team was going to play during the bowl season and one team would look at the result of the season and be happy with any type of improvement.

It is funny how something’s can change in just one year.

This year the game at Huskies Stadium in DeKalb, Illinois does have a lot of implications waiting for the result of the game.

A bowl game for Eastern Michigan University is something that the  program have not been to or seen since 1987 or have the Eagles placed a football trophy in the trophy case since 1987 either, this is only after just two short years ago the Eagles finished the season 0-12 and one year ago they finished 2-10.

English said he considers himself as a dreamer and he keeps dreaming the Eastern Michigan University football program will be respected by the Mid-American Conference and the rest of the NCAA.

After the 31-17 victory over the University at Buffalo, senior defensive lineman Brad Ohrman sat at the right side of English and said that the team is improved because of the fact that the players have bought into the philosophy of English and of his coaching staff and the non-believers were let go of the program.

Many Eastern Michigan University football fans will be setting in front of the television Friday 10 a.m. November 25, 2011 tuned into ESPNU with a turkey sandwich and a beverage and with one prayer-hoping that the Eastern Michigan University Eagles  football team is ready for that one giant step toward respectability and a bowl game.
