It is December 1st, and the story lines are building up across the National hockey league. The most obvious story is the return of Sidney Crosby with the Pittsburgh Penguins, as Sid has generated 8 points so far in his return and the pens hold top spot in the eastern conference standing. They are now a force to be reckoned with. The Chicago Black hawks and Detroit Red wings continue to merge up the western standing after some early woes, and Toronto Maple leafs and Minnesota Wild are both surprising the league with their season success so far. They are both at the top of their respected conferences.
One of the stories that have risen is why are the Ottawa Senators in the playoff picture? The Sens are continuing to give teams trouble this season, they are not an easy team to play against right now. The young gun are here and ready to play, that being said, players like Zack smith and Colin Greening are showing that they are more than just a roster filler. Zack Smith who scores 2 goals in the previous win over The Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday has now 6 goals on the year and total of 13 points surpassing his total of last year in only 24 games thus far. The coach is hard work driven and lets his player’s know that. Zack Smith a 3rd line checker was rewarded with power play time vs the Jets. Colin Greening a strong young man, standing at 6’4, skating along slide Jason Spezza and Milan Michalek on the Top line, has notched 11 points so far on the year, Greening may just the answer to what the Sens have been in need of for the past 5 season, Hopefully this kid can prove to be a Power Forward that will dominate the defenders all season long.
The way Milan Michalek is playing this, skating better than he ever has his whole career; He leads the Sens in scoring with 14 goals and just 3 back of the NHL lead. The speed and size is just tough to hold back when driving to the net. The vibe around the Sens world is a positive feeling, the fans and organization feel Milan Michalek is better a fit here then Danny Healtley was, the offensive minded player that Michalek is, and his defensive work ethic goes a long way as well. Something Danny Heatley didn’t do when playing in Ottawa.
It is still a very early time in the NHL season, but analysis are now talking about the Senators being a playoff team this year, just as long as they continue they way they playing. They will need all lines firing each night, so far so good. My early Playoff Projection, Senators grab 7th seed at Year’s end. Due the fact they never seem to quit in games they trail. Hockey with meaning in March this season is looking good, Keep up the Faith Sens Army!
