The Urban Meyer Hire From The Eye’s of a Wolverines Fan

As a Michigan fanatic, the news of Urban Meyer’s hiring as the Buckeye’s new head football coach hit as hard as a Ray Lewis takedown. The Wolverines had just ended their seven game skid against that ‘school from Ohio’ and appeared ready to reassume their position once again as the dominant leaders of the Big Ten. That was before the news broke of the Urban Meyer hire.
Now, the future outlook does not look nearly as bright. Yes, the Wolverines have improved drastically this season, and Brady Hoke has proven himself to be a more than capable recruiter especially in the state of Ohio. However, that one ‘school from Ohio’ has just hired arguably THE BEST coach in all of college football. A coach whose Florida teams for a stretch of four years dominated the SEC which knowingly dominates the Big Ten come bowl season.
To make the matter worse, Urban Meyer’s Buckeyes could resume their winning ways in the annual rivalry with Michigan as soon as next season. The Buckeye’s freshman sensation at quarterback, Braxton Miller, will likely be much improved in his sophomore campaign and is the ideal dual threat passer for Meyer’s offense.
And what about this year’s recruiting class? The University of Michigan boasts one of the nation’s top recruiting classes and by far the top class in the conference. However, nine members of that class are from the state of Ohio. There is no telling how many of those players could rescind on their verbal commitment to the Wolverines and join the newly hired Urban Meyer at that ‘school from Ohio’.
The recruiting scare goes beyond losing potential commitments from Ohio for this year however. Meyer carries such a strong reputation and legacy with him that there is no doubt he will be able to steal recruits away from Michigan and the fellow Big Ten teams from all states in the Mid-West and not just Ohio. Add in the fact that Meyer will likely have the strongest ties to recruiting in the state of Florida and the entire South East corner of the country, and there is more than enough reason for fans of the Wolverines and any other Big Ten school to panic.
What if Meyer is able to recruit similar talent as he did when he was at the University of Florida? The same kind of talent that has frequently embarrassed quality Big Ten foes in recent bowl matchups. Let it be said that Urban Meyer is no Ron Zook. He can recruit with the best of them, and is among the best at getting the most out of those recruits. This spells bad news for the University of Michigan and its fellow members of the Big Ten.
I am not entirely pessimistic in my future hopes for my beloved Wolverines. I believe that they have the right coach and guidance from those at the top to avoid relapsing to the struggles of the Rich Rod Era. There is no doubt, however, that my hopes and expectations have been severely tapered by the Urban Meyer news. Let’s all just hope that Meyer’s tenure at that ‘school from Ohio’ is a short one and that the Wolverines can manage to squeak out another win or two in the rivalry before Meyer is able to turn the Buckeye’s football program around. Otherwise, that ‘school form Ohio’ will likely dominate the Big Ten in a manner that Jim Tressel was never able to accomplish. With how great Tressel was that’s a scary thought to imagine.
