The Kick That Wasn’t

It will go down as the story of the game. Jason Garrett called a time out on the last play of regulation icing Dan Bailey, his own kicker. Bailey would make the first kick and miss the second, sending the Cowboys into overtime where the Cardinals would win the game on a Kevin Kolb pass to LaRod Stevens-Howling for a 52 yard score. Hyphenated name jokes aside, it was a stunning play for Dallas, who clearly went into overtime on their heels.

The Cardinals did an effective job of shutting down the Cowboy’s run game, holding Cowboys lead rusher DeMarco Murray to 38 yards. They were also able to keep the pressure on Tony Romo throughout the game, sacking him 5 times in the game. Dallas was unable to put away the Cardinals throughout the game though, and the Cardinals were able to hang around long enough in the game to stun the Cowboys. It was a bit of a head scratcher as to why Garrett would call a timeout before the kick. Usually that is left to the opposing team’s coach. Garrett probably had a reason for the call, and Bailey will likely say that he should have made the kick regardless of the circumstances, but the fact that he missed under those circumstances will clearly be the spotlight of the game and viewed widely as the blunder of the game.

None of this should take away from a strong game the Cowboys played, but it does put a dent in the momentum the team had been building over a stretch in their schedule where they had won 4 straight. The important thing coming out of this game is that we didn’t see the face of “Team Breakdown”, but more-so the surging of a proud home team that wouldn’t quit. The Cowboys will need to respond quickly as they prepared for next weeks showdown with the New York Giants who came within seconds of a win over the unbeaten Green Bay Packers. The Giants have played strong and the Cowboys will need a strong showing if they want to have any hope of maintaining a lead in the NFC East.
