Curious Timing…Orlando Magic CEO steps down

Posted By Warren Shaw On Dec 6 2011 @ 5:13 pm In Orlando Magic | No Comments

Just a few short days after giving the “OK” for GM Otis Smith to spend whatever is necessary to acquire the players Dwight Howard would want to play with, President and CEO Bob Vander Weide, has tendered his resignation effective immediately according to Orlando’s WKMG news station.

Alex Martins will be promoted to fill the absence of Weide.

The Magic are at a clear crossroads in their franchise’s future with Dwight Howard set to become a free agent in the summer of 2012 so the timing of Weide’s decision could not be more curious.

Is Weide afraid of the forthcoming backlash the franchise is sure to receive if Howard leaves without just compensation for the Magic?

Happy times between Smith and Howard. Will the relationship continue?

At first glance it would appear that the answer is Yes, but Weide’s replacement has already issued a statement proclaiming Weide had been mulling over stepping down for months. Weide had allegedly been waiting for the NBA Labor disputes to be finalized as he had a prominent role as a member of NBA Board of Governors and the NBA Planning Committee.

Be that as it may the timing still comes off as suspect and GM Otis Smith’s just got the target on his back (job) widened.
