Colts pursuit of first win

The Indianapolis Colts added two players to their roster Tuesday. The team (0-12) added defensive back Brandon King and linebacker Kevin Bentley and placed Defensive Tackle Drake Nevis on Injured reserve.

Peyton Manning is still a hopeful, after his second evaluation in late November by Dr. Robert Watkins reporting:

“X-ray and CT examination of the surgical area shows that the fusion performed in September has achieved firm fixation,” said Dr. Robert Watkins. “Peyton will now be allowed to increase the intensity and breadth of his workouts as tolerated. There remains every indication that his recovery will continue. There still is no timetable for Peyton’s return to practice, which is one of many steps in his expected return to game action. He is working hard on a rehabilitation program outlined in conjunction with myself, Erin Barill and Peyton. His response to this plan in the future will dictate his return date.

He will continue to sit on the sidelines with an earpiece in one ear, hoping to help new starter Dan Orlovsky, who made his first start since 2008 with the Lions, in their dreadful 0-16 season.

Last week Orlovsky battled with one of the league’s best, Tom Brady, in what we can consider a very strong first start. Orlovsky replaced Curtis Painter, who was nothing short of dreadful in 8 starts, losing every game with a Quarterback Rating of 66, throwing for only 6 touchdowns, and 9 interceptions. Orlovsky dazzled early, connecting with Pierre Garcon for a 50 yard touchdown. He only had 7 incompletions all game, one of which was an interception thrown to Jerod Mayo.

Win or lose, this is a good sign for the Colts. Let’s not jump the gun too early on Orlovsky as a starting Quarterback in this league; he needs a couple more starts for us to determine that. Curtis Painter doing so terrible could turn out to be a blessing for the Colts after all, because let’s be honest, without Peyton Manning the Colts are nothing (as we have come to find out). Orlovsky, if a proven starter could not only give the Colts leverage for “trade bait” but he could also (hypothetically speaking) give them freedom to go a different route come Draft Day from the ever so popular Andrew Luck. Although, doubtful that the Colts will pick anyone but Luck. Nonetheless, If Orlovsky is ready to be an efficient quarterback in this league; we can certainly say that it gives the Colts more options than they were considering with Painter under the helm.

The Colts could use a young and talented running back just as much, if not more than a young QB that is more consistent than Donald Brown, and Joseph Addai. Indianapolis could draft Alabama stud Trent Richardson instead of Luck and either draft a second round quarterback, or trade up. This is where Orlovsky’s next couple starts are very important. If he keeps doing well, and proving his worth as an NFL starter, this could allow the Colts to trade up, and get two first round picks in attempt to rebuild their apparent “gimpy offense”
Next game Orlovsky will face a monstrous challenge with the Baltimore Ravens. If tuned into this game, keep in mind the future for the Colts, watch how Orlovsky handles one of the leagues more fierce pass rushes (Notables: Ngata, Suggs). We are all now faced with the decision: Starter, or not a Starter.

Injury Notables:
Joeseph Addai (Hamstring, did not practice, status questionable)
Blair White(Knee, did not practice, status questionable)
Jamaal Anderson (Hip, limited practice, status questionable)
Stevie Brown (Hamstring, limited practice, status questionsable)

They may have a trade gem with him. Can’t say too much after one single start, but if he can wrap up the rest of the season with some more solid starts, he will have some value. He then, could help the Colts trade for another 1st round pick, Draft Trent Richardson, keep Manning, and draft a QB late in the 1st round (Griffin, Barkley) to then develop. It would save a lot of money this way, because Luck if picked 1st, would be a huge contract with a lot of guaranteed money, to just be sitting.

Jamie, if you’re a long time Colts fan; One thing Peyton Manning has taught you over the last decade is how to take pride in your organization. They’ll be back, trust me. Great organization as a whole.

The colts need to get Andrew Luck, its pivotal to the Colts future. Peyton is already past his prime, and Orlovsky? Can you say a joke…. Remember that sweet Lions safety.

      Joey,
You can not say Andrew Luck is pivotal to any teams future, due to the fact that he is unproven in the Colts System, or any system in the NFL for that manner. What i was simply saying is, Peyton Manning (IMHO) is still a great, Andrew Luck will not come into this league being as prolific as Peyton will be. We’re talking about a guy who threw for 4,700 yards last year with a “mysterious lack of velocity” in his throwing arm (Later we figured out it was caused from his vertebrae).

I will ignore the “joke” comment about Orlovsky, because the safety play, was one play. That does not determine quarterbacks in this league, and if one play DID, Brett Favre would have been checked out of the NFL after his first pass.

I was simply saying that Trent Richardson would make a HUGE impact on the Colts right away, it would allow them to not rely SO MUCH on a quarterback (young or old) right off the bat. Richardson stays healthy, is unbelievably strong (benching over 400 pounds, and squatting over 600, while running a 4.4 ) and if Orlovsky keeps doing well, someone might bite on him for a decent trade. Either way, I DO in fact believe that Matt Barkley, and Griffin III could be just as effective as Luck can be with 3 years behind Manning. This is the route I would take, instead of losing out on Money by shipping away Manning, or sitting Luck for 40 million dollars for the first 3 years, and not adding ANYTHING for the now.

Being an indianapolis native my whole entire life, I agree im not sure luck is necessarily a good fit fo the Colts. I would much rather have RG3, he embodies the southern spirit like manning,

      Brock,
I agree…I think Luck (as the 1st pick of the NFL draft) Would want too much as a colt. I strongly believe that the Colts would be better off drafting a stud halfback like Trent Richardson, and taking pressure off whoever will be the starting quarterback for the Colts next year. I am not sold on the fact that ANY college prospect will be as prolific as a passer as Peyton Manning will be in the 2012 season. I believe the best bet is to take Alabama stud Trent Richardson, and trade up to draft RG3 as a developmental quarterback who will take significantly less money.

exactly RG3 isnt gonn ask for as big a contract as luck. I just dont think the colts should draft a guy who is gonna get paid 30 million a year and still back up manning

Do you think Peyton will be able to return and still have the same fire and drive?

      I do,

I think Peyton has already shown fire and drive in his training camp. Champ Bailey has already raved about his increased arm strength, yet Peyton insists he still has rehabilitation to go through. Tom Moore, Manning’s former offensive coordinator commented on Manning, after taking a visit to the Broncos open practice saying “Nobody works harder than him, on anything.
His work habits are fantastic. He’ll be fantastic his entire life, in whatever he does, because of his exceptional work ethic and dedication and commitment”

The fire and drive has been instilled in Manning’s brain since High-School. I think the only concern is his ability to take a hit, after recovering from an injury that has ruined greats like Sterling Sharpe, and Nick Collins playing careers.
