Manning Up

Despite the 38-35 loss to the undefeated Green Bay Packers, there is still hope in the New York Giants future. Eli Manning led the Giants 69 yards down the field to tie the game at 35. The one and only problem was that he left Aaron Rodgers and the Cheeseheads with 58 seconds left to go in regulation. After the NFL’s best quarterback made the one minute offense look too easy, Mason Crosby kicked the game winning 31 yard field goal, crushing the Giants hope. But don’t count the G-men out yet.
This game is remarkably similar to the 2007 regular season finale the Giants had with the New England Patriots, who were also undefeated at the time. Eli Manning had an incredible game throwing four touchdown passes, including one in the final two minutes. The Giants fell just short after failing to retrieve an onsides kick in the final minute. However, this game rejuvenated the boys in blue and led them to become Super Bowl champions, defeating the Pats in a rematch.
After being annihilated by the scolding hot New Orleans Saints just a week ago, a litany of questions were asked about the Giants all week: Had the team quit? Was this just another one of Giants late season collapses? Has Tom Coughlin lost his hold in the locker room? But all these questions were answered Sunday afternoon. The Giants came out on fire, and on the third play Manning connected to the unknown Travis Beckum, for a touchdown. The defense, despite giving up 38 points to the Packers showed sign of light. The tremendous defensive line of the G-men got after Aaron Rodgers almost every play. And if it wasn’t for a couple of failed contains which led to Rodgers rushing for three first downs, they might have been able to come up with the victory.
The Dallas Cowboys falling to the struggling 5-7 Arizona Cardinals in overtime also led the Giants to some relief. This sets up a Sunday night showdown between the Giants and Dallas, inDallas. If the Giants can play like they did against the Packers, they should destroy the Cowboys. It seems as if the Cowboys curl up in the fettle position nearly every game they are forced to compete. With four more regular season games remaining, and two against the Cowboys, the Giants should get into the playoffs. Look for them to get after Tony Romo and force him to turn the ball over a couple times. On the offensive side, Eli Manning and his receivers should tear apart the Cowboys secondary. Take the Giants as a 3 point underdog and watch for them to win straight up.
When it comes time for the playoffs, this is where the Giants will be playing their best football. Although they will most likely not get a game at home, the Giants usually play pretty well on the road. With Bradshaw and others getting healthy, we might eventually see a rematch between Rodgers and Manning. And who knows? We might see them defeat, the undefeated once again.
