Angels swoop in again, sign Hawk-ins

While waiting for CJ Wilson to make his decision, the Angels filled another hole on their roster by signing reliever LaTroy Hawkins to a 1-year deal.

Hawkins signed for 3 million, not bad for a middle innings, and sometimes late innings guy. The 38 year old Hawkins should do what Fernando Rodney couldn’t do, and that’s mentor Jordan Walden, and some of the other young Halo hurlers.

Another thing about Hawkins is that he has been around. The Halos will be his 7th team, but first on the west coast. Except for 2 seasons ago, Hawkins has also been quite durable, averaging just over 61 IP a year in his 12 years pitching out of the bullpen. Another good sign is the fact that Hawkins has more than double the strikeouts than bases on balls, not including intentional bases on balls. Having watched Rodney pitch the past couple years, that is a real sigh of relief.

This is a good, under the radar signing. Hawkins was a nice addition to the Brewers bullpen last season, and will help out the Angels next year.

Jerry DiPoto is proving to be a more than adequate General Manager. If he reels in Wilson, while not giving him Fort Knox, than he is even more than that.

Exciting happenings in Anaheim.

Go Angels!
