No Place Like Home For The Holidays.

North Carolina will be staying home this holiday season, it’s a good thing.

On Tuesday, the North Carolina Tar Heels got an early Christmas present by dismantling a hapless Evansville club 97-48.  It was the first of a 9 game home stand. That will keep Carolina at the Smith Center until the third week of January.

The Heels aren’t exactly pushing themselves.  The combined records of the nine teams in this home stand are 35-46.

Saturday’s opponent will be Long Beach State. The 49′ers come into the Dean Dome with a 4-4 record. They last played Tuesday in Lawrence Kansas, losing 88-80.

There are four 49′ers averaging double figures, led by Casper Ware who is throwing in 17.7 per game.

In all honesty this is a game the Tarheels should win pretty easily. Long Beach is three time zones away. The 49′ers are leading the nation in frequent flyer miles and the Heels are simply better.

There will be a challenging match up with Texas on December 21. The Texas game is preceeded by two snoozers with Appalachian State and Nicholls State. It is followed by two equally underwhelming games with Elon and Monmouth College.

The last two games of the home stand will be at home against Boston College 3-6 and Miami 6-2.

We should wake up on January 11th and find the Tarheels at 15-2, 2-0 in the ACC and ready for a six week march to the madness of March. There could be a bump in the road with Texas or Miami but I would be shocked if that were the case.

Carolina does a great job putting their schedule together. You get Michigan State, Wisconsin and Kentucky to get a look at where you are early.  You have a nice break in the middle, to get you through exams and the holidays.  Hopefully, you arrive at your conference schedule ready to compete for an ACC title and a national championship.
