CHRISTIAN PONDER LOOKS LIKE A ROOKIE

Sunday against the Lions, Minnesota demonstrated why they are a 2-11 team.  They had a rookie QB make mistake after mistake.  The Viking’s defense played well, but gave up a bunch of points after turnovers.  And the officials missed calls, the biggest of which was a facemask on Joe Webb on the final play of the game.  Yep, all of these things happen to a losing team.  These are things that happen frequently in Detroit, but it is usually the Lions who are on the short end.

Christian Ponder looked awful.  He had four turnovers and it should have been more.  Ponder handed the Lions 14 points without their offense touching the field.  For most of this season, the Viking’s rookie QB has been a pleasant surprise.  On Sunday, Christian cost Minnesota the game.  Yes, it might not matter that much.  The Vikes haven’t been in the playoff mix all year, but at the same time, the team wants to see progress from Ponder and Sunday was horrible.  I applaud Coach Leslie Frazier for benching the rookie.  Brian Billick, who was announcing the game, didn’t like the switch to Joe Webb, but I think a coach has to stand up and bench players occasionally.  If a guy is having a dreadful game, it’s not fair to the rest of the team to just let him flounder out there, even if he’s a #1 draft pick.  Webb, a 6th round pick a year ago, almost led Minnesota to their biggest comeback since 1985.  Almost being the key word.

The Vikings are going to have one of the top 3 picks in the 2012 draft.  This is a certainty.  What will they do with that pick?  If Ponder continues to struggle, would they take a shot at Andrew Luck or RGIII?  Only time will tell that, but some of the mistakes on Sunday were pee-wee football stuff.  I felt like I was watching Vinny Testaverde in Tampa Bay.  The future of the Minnesota Vikings is murky at best.  The future of Christian Ponder might lie in the next three games.
