I was tempted to skip watching the game yesterday. The Redskins with all their injuries and suspended players playing the TD happy New England Patriots, I thought why put myself through that? For you and this blog if why and I’m glad I did. It was a great game.
The New England Patriot’s defense is the worst and it showed by allowing over 400 yards in offense to the struggling Redskins offense. Not only did the Redskins yield 170 yards rushing but 301 passing yards and this is without their offensive tackles Jammal Brown (injured during warmup) and Trent Williams (suspended). Tom Brady is one of the best but his first time on the field threw 3 consecutive incomplete passes.
The first score of the game was not by Brady or his offense. It was by their horrible defense by sacking Rex Grossman in the end zone who fumbled. The Redskins scored right after with a FG. The Patriots then scored with a pass TD to lead 14-3, but then the Redskins threw a TD pass to Gaffney to bring them within 4 on an 84 yard drive.
In the second quarter, the Redskins first play was a play action bonanza Grossman to Helu, who tosses to Banks who then tosses to a wide open Santana Moss hovering near the goal line for a TD. It was truly unbelievable and the Redskins had the lead 17-14.
The defense steps up for the Redskins and keeps the Patriots at a FG and ties 17-17. The Skins would then get a FG to take the lead again 20-17. Then the Brady Game started.
Tom Brady decided to run the ball against the Redskins’ D. I don’t know what he was thinking, but as he was running, London Fletcher was approaching. Brady began a slide but was still standing when Fletcher tackled him. There was a flag and it was NOT a penalty for a personal foul etc, they said it was forearm to the head hit, but it was not even close. You do not accuse a player of his experience and stature of this type of hit yet Brady gets what Brady wants and London takes the penalty. So what does Brady do next? He runs it again! He knows now that the refs are watching closely and the defense is going to think twice about tackling him. Baby. At least the D kept them to a FG only. 20-20 into the half.
In the 3rd quarter, DeAngelo Hall for some reason decides to take the flag thrown on him for ahold and toss it. Add on 15 more yards to that. Rookie Ryan Kerrigan then makes a mistake by holding Rob Gronkowski and he then runs in for a TD. 27-20 Patriots.
Redskins answer back with their own TD with pass to David Anderson to tie again 27-27. Patriots then score 34-27.
Now it’s the 4th quarter. Historically, the Redskins choke and allow lots of points. Not this game. No points were allowed to either team in the 4th quarter. The Redskins had the ball with under 1 minute remaining and were within 15 yards of the goal line and the tie (or win with a 2 point conversion). Rex Grossman throws to a very covered Santana Moss and it’s bobbled and intercepted. Game Over.
Great game by the Redskins Defense AND Offense. Roy Helu stood out with 126 yards, Stallworth with 96 yards and Grossman with 2 TDs and 1 interception (which was not on him). Was proud but really wanted that upset win!

I lived in Greene County Virginia for about 5 years of my childhood. This span of time was enough to imprint the love of the Washington Redskins (and hate of the Dallas Cowboys) into my life forever, even though I am Canadian and still live in Canada. I am in no way an expert on sports, football, or even the Redskins, but I do absolutely adore them, their fans and their home state(s). My favourite Redskin is and will always be Darrell Green (not because we share the same last name lol). I've adored Chris Cooley since he joined the team from the 2004 draft and love London Fletcher. Hail to the Redskins! See you October 30th in my home town of Toronto.
