The Ottawa Senators, traveled to buffalo to face-off with their north east division rival on Tuesday night. The Sens looking to snap a their little 3 game losing streak, Sens have been in a tough spot lately, giving up leads to the Washington Capitals last week. Then blowing another 3 goal lead to the Devils in New Jersey last Thursday night then coming back home to Ottawa to face the Western conference power house Vancouver Canucks on Hockey Night in Canada on Saturday. The Sens showed up physically in that affair, matching the Canucks Hit for hit, however offensively just could not compete with highly skilled forwards of the Canucks team.
A little Tuesday night action in Buffalo for the Sens, wondering what kinda game we would see from our home town heroes after some off ice issues have been brewing, the club recently sent forward Nikita Filatov back to Russia where we will finish the year in the KHL. Peter Regin made his Return to the lineup and also tough guy defenceman Matt “Big Country” Carkner.
The Sens started fresh out of the gate, picking up the game’s first goal, on a snap shot by Milan Michalek, who now lead the National Hockey league in goals. It was Michalek’s 19th goal of the season off a sweet look back pass from Jason Spezza and Rookie Forward Colin Greening pitching in on the goal. Shortly after, Zenon Konopka droped the Mites with Sabres Forward Cody McCormick as the two middleweights exchanged right hooks, with McCormick landing two good early shots followed by Konopka getting the late finishing blows and knocking down the Sabres toughguy. A questionable decision by konopka to drop the gloves shortly after Ottawa scoring the 1st goal, You knew he had the win this fight. The Sens kept the lead for most part of the Period, then some defensive breakdowns began, Jared Cowen and Erik Karlsson and Chris Phillipps making some bad decision and quickly it became a whole new game as the Sens were playing catch up, but which isn’t new to them this year. Two fast goal by the Sabres give them a lead after the 1st period.
Nothing much happened in the Second Period, both teams getting some Power Play time and old man rushes but no scoring in the 2nd frame, most important detail, Milan Michalek collided with Erik Karlsson hard in open ice, Michalek would play 2 more shift before heading to the dressing, he did not return, as The Sens would have their top scorer to help them make the comeback.
To the 3rd we go a hard fought period by all line, eventually Peter Regin getting his 1st goal of the season from a long shot inside the blue line found its way through a maze of bodies, betting Ryan Miller on the right side. Tie Game at this point with just less than 6 minutes to go in the game. A last minute push by Sens just wouldn’t work, but a little bump by Sens forward Colin Greening, Handing in a Scrap; clearly the Sabres don’t want anyone touching Miller.
Off to Overtime, just under a minute in, Jared Cowen gets the Game winner, SENS WIN SENS WIN, ending their 3 game losing streak. 2 points in the books for Ottawa, A great overall game, finally something to cheer about for sens fans, but cost them their Number one scorer. I guess its true, winning has its price.
