Grumpy Green Men

The debate on who the lockout’s shortened season would benefit has never really be in favor of the Boston Celtics. With an accelerated season comes and even more accelerated camp and pre-season.
Not exactly what the doctor ordered.
In the Celtics media day session, frustration was expressed by Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. They both indicated they felt rushed and stressed the importance of building chemistry and continuity in a basketball family during the training camp session.
Garnett was especially candid and humorous when he said:
“Timing is everything. Chemistry is something that you don’t just throw in the frying pan and mix it up with another something, then throw it on top of something, then fry it up and put it in a tortilla and put in a microwave, heat it up and give it to you and expect it to taste good. You know? For those of you who can cook, y’all know what I’m talking about. If y’all can’t cook, this doesn’t concern you.”
The next Emeril Lagasse KG is not, but he does know what it takes for a team to get to the championship level.
The Celtics are above just trying to contend it is championship or bust just as it has been since the inception of Garnett and Allen’s arrival to form the “Big 3″ alongside Paul Pierce.
To the point of the soon to be Hall of Famers, the Celtics entered camp with just six players under contract. New faces have already been added and trying to get them to understand the “Unbuntu” philosophy certainly takes time. Players like the recently added Chris Wilcox and Keyon Dooling have had little in the way of playoff experience and competition in a championship atmosphere. Joining the Celtics is a huge step in their careers but comes with the responsibility of championship type play and expectations.
Injuries were one of the fears that a rushed season would bring and they are already rearing their all to familiar head in training camp.
Pierce is missing practice time with a foot injury and Rondo is dealing with an ankle injury. Jeff Green also failed his physical with a mystery ailment the team has yet to give details on.
While the injuries are minor this is not the start Celtics fans want to have especially with a difficult opening schedule. Boston plays the first official NBA game of the year on the road Christmas Day in New York to take on the Knicks. Their next game is also on the road December 27 in Miami.
Doc Rivers knows how to handle his veterans. He will be more concerned about finishing strong and playing into June than these early challenges against the Eastern Conference elite.
Injuries, lockout, rushed camp and disposition aside the Boston Celtics know what they have to do. Garnett said “You don’t get to pick and chose when to be a professional..you have to get past mad and come in here and do your job.”
