SENS Teach the Pens
Posted By Jonathan Ward On Dec 16 2011 @ 11:16 pm In NHL,Ottawa Senators | No Comments
Friday In Ottawa, The Senators at home to face the Penguins after a tough beating from Stanley cup champs, The Boston Bruins. Penguins missing top players, Jordan Stall, Sidney Crosby and Defenceman Michalek. Senators without, Milan Michalek , Filip Kuba and Sergei Gonchar. Battle of the back up goalies tonight as well. Brett Johnson taking on Alex Auld, Auld not playing at home since his 7-1 loss at the hands of the Flyers on October 18th.
The 1st period, both team enchanged scoring changes, but both goalies standing tall as there was no scoring in the opening frame. We would of expected some rough and tough play with both team dressing their toughguys. Chris Neil gets into a scrum with Aaron Asham half way through the 1st period, but Linesman step in quick and cooler heads prevail. No score after 1.
To the second period, Ottawa still missing their leading scorer, Michalek 19 goals on the year who also leads the NHL in goals. The Sens will need others to step up in the meantime. Jason Spezza showing some veteran presence tonight, leading the way in the 2nd period, taking full control of the game, Sens get on the board with a feed from Spezza to Colin Greening as he finds the back of the net for his 8th of the year. Not to far later, Steve Sulivan gets the Pens back into the game with his 8th. Shortly after that Jason Spezza would wire his 11th goal passed Johnson then just 3 minutes after that, The captain Daniel Alfredsson puts one by Johnson and the Sens lead 3-1. Senators would find themselves in penalty trouble and the Pens would make them pay, 2 late second period goals would tie this game up at 3 a piece. But The Sens would come out on top after 2 periods when a rare goal by Zenon Konopka to end the period, 5-3 Sens at this point.
In the 3rd period, Not a surprise, The Sens had their legs going, taking it to the Pens hard, finishing checks and fire pucks at Marc Andre Fleury, Who came in to replace Johnson after allowing 5 goals. Jason Spezza gets his 2nd goal of the game and 4th point of the game who is now with 36 points on the year and just 3 back of the NHL lead. The D-man stud Jared Cowen getting his 3rd assist and his 4th point also. Nick Faligno would get checked in open ice by Penguins D-man Dupres called up from Wilkes Barre earlier this month. Faligno left the game but i assume it was just being causious with the Sens holding a 3 goal lead. Pens would add a late goal but it wouldnt matter, Sens win 6-4.
