Chiefs Ruin The Perfect Season

Posted By Matt Brody On Dec 19 2011 @ 2:47 pm In Kansas City Chiefs | 1 Comment

They played their best game of the season and shocked the sports world.  The Kansas City Chiefs ended the Green Bay Packers’ run at perfection and a winning streak that dated back to last December.

This was a game that the Packers should have won on paper, but on any given Sunday any team can beat another team.  The pursuit of perfection may be over, but they still have other important goals in sight.  Despite this loss the Packers can still wrap up home-field advantage with another win and then focus their attention on the Super Bowl.

The Chiefs meanwhile still technically have a shot at the playoffs.  With Denver and Oakland both losing yesterday there’s still hope for Kansas City.

The troops rallied around interim head coach Romeo Crennel and played some inspired football.  It would’ve been easy for the team to just roll over, but they were professional about the situation and looked like they legitimately wanted to end the Packers’ win streak.

Everyone knows the passing attack is the strongest part of Green Bay’s offense and the Chiefs went out of their way to prevent big plays .  On 86 percent of their defensive plays Kansas City had five defensive backs on the field.  The game plan worked and it’s probably the reason they won the game.  Aaron Rodgers only had 59 yards passing in the first half and finished the game completing 17 of 35 passes for 235 yards.

Kyle Orton was able to move the ball down the field and the Chiefs scored five different times.  They made it into the red zone multiple times, but were forced to kick a couple field goals.  The Chiefs finally made it into the end zone on a Jackie Battle run late in the fourth quarter.

The Chiefs controlled this game.  They were able to run the ball efficiently, pass downfield, and dominated in time of possession.  They just looked like they wanted it more.  It took until Week 15 but on this day the Chiefs ended all talks of the perfect season.
