Jared Cowen, the Future is Strong on the Senators BlueLine.

In 2009 the Ottawa Senators selected from the WHL, Spokane Chiefs defenseman, Jared Cowen.  At the time it seemed like a pick that would take years to develop.  Cowen wasn’t the best defenseman. He wasn’t ranked among the top defensemen in the draft and was never a big point getter in his junior days. He managed to rack up only a combined 41 points in 3 seasons and then suffered a knee injury that required surgery. Expectations were not high in the eyes of Senator Fans. However Cowen bounced back fast, scoring 44 points in his final junior year and taking a run at the WHL Championship. The Senators assigned Cowen to their American Hockey League team to help them compete for a Calder Cup Championship; Cowen added 4 assist in 10 playoff games helping The Binghamton Senators win the Calder Cup. At the start of the 2011-2012 NHL season, it was obvious that Jared Cowen would most likely be playing his 1st season as a professional hockey player at the AHL level. The depth of the Senators defence unit was strong. Players like Erik Karlsson, Chris Phillipps, Matt Carkner, Brian Lee, Sergei Gonchar, Filip Kuba and Patrick Weircioch who would compete for a spot as the 7th defenseman on the Ottawa Senators roster.

In the world of hockey, we know things never go according to plan, and Jared Cowen found himself grabbing a roster spot after a great pre-season he had, netting a few Goals and showing his toughness. He’s a in your face, hard nose defender, making forwards think twice about going around him on the ice. He will finish his check every time, and when he hits you, it’s going to hurt. Cowen now 20 years of age, stands at 6’5, 230. The kid is going to be a force on the blue line and he is already showing that this season. When he’s jumping up into the play in the offensive zone, he is a tough body out of the way, he plays his cards well and knows when to jump up and join the rush. He has 4 goals this season as a result. [2]

It was unexpected for Jared Cowen to develop this fast, but he can clearly play at the NHL level. He displays it every night. Cowen is a player that every team wants to have. He’s a tough defenseman to play against. He will punish the opposition’s forward by laying the body on them, he has a great strong shot, he is a big strong kid who can skate well, he has great vision, he’s a great 1st pass player and he can fight. He can do it all and at a young age he is making a name for himself as one of the best rookies this season. He is ranked 12th among all rookies in scoring thus far this season and is 2nd among the rookie defenseman behind Adam Larsson of the New Jersey Devils.

The Future is Bright in Ottawa for defenseman. Erik Karlsson has established himself as a NHL all-star in just 3 seasons in the NHL, Jared Cowen is on the rise and players like Eric Gryba and Patrick Weircioch who are currently playing in the AHL are showing a lot of potential. It’s a matter of time before the Ottawa Senators have one of the youngest and talented defence cores in the league.
