Going Bowling, Again

The Florida State Seminoles are headed to the the Champs Sports Bowl in Orlando, Florida to face the prestiged Notre Dame University. This marks the 30th consecutive year that the Seminoles have been invited to a bowl game, clearly a historic mark for their university athletics.
After a disappointing season that once held National Championship conversations, Florida State finished 8-4, out of the BCS Top 25 (finishing 25th in the USA Today Poll) . But, the Seminoles look to finish the season on the right foot as they head into next season with another Top 2 recruiting class in the Nation , right behind the Longhorns of Texas. I guess you can call this game somewhat of a rivalry between the Fighting Irish and Florida State, even though it’s been in more of a dormant stage in the last 8 years or so.
Whatever kind of game it is, Jimbo Fisher only has one thing in mind and that is to obtain his second bowl victory in as many years. It’s obvious that the Noles’ find success through the air with Junior EJ Manuel under center, the only question is the ground game, led by true freshman Devonta Freeman. The starting RB has contributed this season with about 500 yards and 8 TD on the ground, while averaging an above average 5 yards per carry.
Sorry if I seem to lose my sense of knowledge during this article, because as I write my beloved Boston Celtics are staring at an 0-2 start due to the offensive show the Miami Heat are putting on. So to focus on the positive things (kinda) in the sports world, the College Bowl Season has been a modest one at best, but I’d like to voice my opinion on the BCS system.
Oklahoma State was absolutely stabbed in the back by the BCS, Alabama should not be in the National Championship Game, and for just about one reason: they had their chance. Alabama missed 4 field goals against LSU in a game they should have won by a landslide, while OSU went into Iowa State 1 day after a school plane crash in which the Women’s basketball Head Coach and Assistant were both killed, and lost in double overtime.
Yet, to clear all of this up the NCAA could simply throw in an easy and productive system that I myself and any other knowledgeable sports fan could come up with. You limit the bowl games down to 25 games, therefore still have the Top 25, but a Bowl Ranking system that holds the Top 40. Then, to decide the National Champion you enter the Top 12 into a single-elimination tournament with #1-4 getting a first round bye. That tournament ultimately holds 11 games to decide 1 Champion. Then, with the remaining 28 teams a voting committee can decide who plays who in the other 14 games, trying to make the most even-talented matchups.
I’ll bet you’re sitting down reading this thinking, that’s a wonderful idea. I’ve said the same things over and over, but for now the fans have to settle with what we have and the Florida State fans have to focus on shutting down the Irish.
Maybe someone will listen.
