Hawks beat Miami

In previous posts, I predicted the NBA season would not happen. I thought both sides would be intransigent. I was wrong. It took a lot longer than expected, but we have it. Of course, with the compressed schedule, this will be a war of attrition more than anything. I considered typing this without spaces, but there was no sense being cute, at least not this early.

Okay, the Hawks won their first three games with a pair over New Jersey and one over Washington. Then they lost to Houston. This played into some of my posts from last season about being unable to beat a quality opponent. It seems I was wrong about this as well. Atlanta just handed Miami their first loss of the year in a 100-92 beatdown in South Beach. Give the Hawks credit. Miami had a four point lead at the end of the first, but Atlanta never went away. They stayed around before using a 33-21 fourth to put the shell-shocked Heat away. Tracy MacGrady came up big off the bench, as he scored 16, including several big buckets in that fourth. Joe Johnson led with 21, Al Horford had 16, and new starting point guard Jeff Teague contributed 15. LeBron had 28, while Dwayne Wade had a miserable night, scoring only 12 on 4-17 from the floor (but 4 of 6 from three).

Atlanta runs their record to 4-1, but it’s way to early to make generalizations. It’s a long season, and this week proves it. This was the first of five games in six days. They’re back in action against the Bulls tomorrow, before playing those dreaded back-to-back-to-backers starting Thursday (home dates with Miami and Chicago sandwiched around a trip to Charlotte). This affects everyone, so it should even itself out. The big question is which team has the most stamina, and, in the abbreviated camp, were they able to work on it.
