Before I break this news to you, you may need to sit down.
Ok, here goes.…. I have just read that Fernando Rodney and the Tampa Bay Rays have agreed on a 1 year deal, worth an astounding 2-million dollars. There are options and more money in the future of the deal, but you get the gist.
When I read that, I nearly passed out. If Rodney is worth 2-million, than Mariano Rivera is worth 2 billion, or maybe 2-trillion.
Since he had a lot of time sitting the last month of the 2011 season, Rodney has developed a comedy routine. Who knew the man was so funny. Here are his comments after signing this joke of a deal,
“… (Tampa Bay) told me that the closer position is undefined. I will fight for that spot. I have faith in God that in a fight for the position, I’ll be the winner,”
FAITH IN GOD! Give me a break. Why do athletes always have to invoke the almighty when talking about anything.
Hey, if he can do it, so can I. Here were my reactions when Rodney was either warming up, pitching, or in any way affiliated with the Halos.
1. Good GOD, not him!
2. GOD-dammit, throw a strike!
3. GOD help us, he just walked the bases loaded, and refused to back up home plate.
4. Rodney injured himself? It’s a GOD-send.
5. Thank GOD, Rodney is now a Ray
It would have been nice if Rodney would have said something like, “I understand I stole the Angels money the past couple years, but I hope I can resurrect (subliminal God reference) my career in Tampa”.
My question to Tampa is why? Did you watch Rodney pitch this past year? In 4 innings vs. the Rays in 2011, Rodney fashioned a 6.75 ERA.
Could it that they liked what they saw at the end of the 2011 season? In two September appearances, Rodney’s ERA was a cool 54.00. He didn’t even pitch after September 12th.
In August and September the future Rays closer walked 13 guys in 8 innings.
Now I will admit that there were times he could look dominant, but those times were few and far between, and they mostly came when the games were not on the line. Although in April 2010 I can say that I loved the guy. What happened, we’ll never know.
Let me leave you with this. Rodney has a pure power arm, almost hitting triple digits on a radar gun. If the Angels, with a far for settled bullpen, let this guy go, what does it say about him.
It say’s good riddance.

O'kay I'll talk about myself a little. I've been working in the television/radio industry for over 21 years. I started at 2 so I am just a tad over 21 (That is a joke). My career has taken me around and and even out of the United States. Right now I call Vegas home, but I just never know where life will take me next. Until 2002 my irrational love for the California/Anaheim/LAA had taken me down some very dark roads, but with Arte Moreno in charge I finally saw the a light at the end of the road. I really love most every sports and having as much fun as possible.
