Angels can’t sign another free agent………..Cantu

I know it doesn’t compare to the Albert Pujols, C.J. Wilson, and maybe not even the LaTroy Hawkins deal, but Jorge Cantu is one of the signings that may turn out to be a blessing in disguise.

The Halos inked Cantu to a minor league deal on Friday. Cantu, who had a disappointing season last year in San Diego, is just 2 seasons removed from driving on 100 runs with the Marlins. In a weird coincidence, Cantu has had his best seasons in the state of Florida. Along with that fine season with the Marlins, Cantu also drove in 117 with the Rays back in 2005.

In parts of 7 seasons with the Marlins and Rays, Cantu has hit 99 home runs, while driving in 449 runs. In 3 partial seasons with the Reds, Rangers and Padres, Cantu has hit 5 home runs, with 27 RBI. Hopefully, he can break that trend.

If Cantu can regain his stroke, it may allow the Halos to deal Alberto Callaspo. Cantu is just as versatile, able to play 1st, 2nd and 3rd.

Cantu is about to 30 at the end of this month, so you would figure he has a number of good seasons left in him.

Low risk, high reward, move for the Halos.

So far, I like all the moves GM Jerry DiPoto has made.

Spring training begins in 44 days.

Go Angels!
