Tom Coughlin and the Giants make all the big plays to knock off the Falcons to advance in the NFL tournament

The New York Giants took on an Atlanta Falcons squad this afternoon and sent them home in convincing fashion with a 24 to 2 victory. While the score indicates a blow out, it was far from that. In fact, this game was in the balance till two huge plays in the 3rd quarter tilted the game in a big way to Big Blue.
Before I get to those two plays, allow me to let you enter my random thoughts on a quarter-by-quarter basis.
These were thoughts I wrote down as the game progressed.
–Can someone get a first down here? Either both offenses look really bad or both defenses look really good.
–Uh Oh… John Abraham came to play. He looks great. Giants need to do make an adjustment to handle him
— Yeah…. Giants get the first 1st down of game at the 8:43 mark on a pass to Ballard.
—Booo…. Three and out right after.
—Atlanta goes no huddle and is moving the ball.
—Atlanta comes to 4th and inches right as the quarter ends
—Giants stop Ryan on QB sneak and get the ball back. Wow.
–Uggh…. Atlanta gets a Safety when back up James Sanders gets to Eli in the end zone
—Giants Defense makes big stop to get the ball back.
–Eli makes great scramble to pick up first down to keep drive alive. Biggest play by the offense so far. Hmmm….
—Jacobs rumbles for 31-yard gain. Aikman announces that the Giants had only four runs all season of 20 yards or more. That is incredible.
—Giants going on 4th and inches…Gulp. This is never good.
—Jacobs makes it after a second effort. WOW!!! This is looking like we are actually going to have a running game today. That is going to be huge for us.
—Touchdown!!! Great pass and catch to Hakeem Nicks. Looks like he is over his drops issue.
—Giants get ball back and on a 3rd and a short one, don’t call for a measurement and throw medium slant pattern that falls incomplete. I can’t believe the call. Horrible. That could hurt. If they lose this game, that will come up in post game conversation.
–Falcons get ball but they too have some strange calls.
—Giants lead at the half, 7 to 2.
–Ross gets hurt in collision with JPP on a tipped pass.
–Snee gets hurt on Giants next possession.
—Giants look good on drive but it stalls at Atlanta 5. Hicks got mugged in end zone but no call was made. Tynes kicks 22 yd FG and Giants lead 10 to 2.
–Atlanta drives down into Giants territory. Coughlin notices they have 12 men in their huddle and alerts refs. Big Play.
–_Atlanta once more is going on 4th and inches.
–Big Play Alert…# 1!!!! Ryan is stopped again. Unreal!!! Where was this Giants defense all season?
—Big Play Alert…#2!!! From the Giants 28 on third and three, Hicks catches a short pass over the middle to convert the first down and then some as he out runs the Falcons secondary for a 72-yard touchdown. Giants go up 17 to 2.
The Falcons were cooked at this point. You could see it in their body language and effort. The Giants offense got the ball two more times after the Hicks touchdown and went on two clock eating drives. One turned into a Manningham, who played great today, touchdown catch and the other a missed FG try.
This was the Giants first home playoff win since 1/14/01 when they knocked off the Vikings 41 to 0 to win the NFC championship. This was also Eli Manning’s and Tom Coughlin’s first Giants home playoff win and first win since the Super Bowl victory 4 years ago.
Overall, very satisfying and a feeling of great optimism heading into next week’s showdown with the Packers. Gotta think, Green Bay should win the game but you never know. The Giants are playing their best football of the season and could pull it off. We do know this…fasten your seatbelts as it promises to be an exciting match up. Stay tuned.
