Packers fall to Giants

The Green Bay Packers said the only way they could lose games is by beating themselves, they did just that against the New York Giants this past Sunday falling to the Giants 20-37.

The Packers looked horribly out of sync against the Giants, dropping passes, missing blocks, fumbling and anything else you can imagine. While I say the Packers beat themselves, the Giants still played a great game of football.

When you look at the game, the Giants came out and played with emotion and passion. The Packers looked like they had no desire to be there or win the game. They played with no emotion.

Still you look back at the game and two plays were the key to the Giants winning.

First play is before half, the hail mary. It completely sucked the wind out of the Packers, as well as the crowd at Lambeau Field. This play also gave the Giants a 10 point lead going into the half rather then a three point lead, which changed the whole second half.

The second play was when defensive end Osi Umenyiora forced a fumble on quarterback Aaron Rodgers. If Umenyiora does not make the play Rodgers has wide receiver Greg Jennings wide open for a touchdown. Those two plays where the key to this game.

Now, let’s look back at my two key players for the Packers. Tight end Jermichael Finley and defensive back Tramon Williams. Both played poorly.

Finley once again had drops which should have been routine catches. He also had some mental breakdowns as well from what it looked like. Including a poorly ran route on a key third down conversion for the Packers.

Williams looked lost in coverage against wide receivers Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz. He was constantly being turned around and allowing the wide receivers to get open. When he did do well on coverage, the Packers pass rush was only three men and applying no pressure.

The Packers played their worst game of football this past Sunday and the Giants took advantage of it. So the Packers will have a few spots to look to improve this offseason, first should be on defense. They need another pass rusher besides linebacker Clay Matthews, so look for defensive linemen and outside linebackers to be high priority.

On offense look for them to try and find a running back, as well as offensive line help. The Packers really need a running back as it looks like running back Ryan Grant is at his end in Green Bay and if they want to win home playoff games in the future a running game will be key.

While the line seems solid and set, there is still never enough depth on your line, which the Packers proved this year. Those are the areas the Packers need to look at when going into the draft and free agency. It is also a wait and see game with defensive back Nick Collins. If he can not return from his neck injury, you need to add safety to your drafting priority.

So now the Packers end this historical season in disappointment, it will be interesting to see what happens this offseason and next year.
