Nobody expected much from the Houston Rockets this season. They almost traded away the core of their team (Kyle Lowry, Kevin Martin, and Luis Scola; their top 3 scorers) for Pau Gasol before the season, and once Stern and the NBA infamously rejected that trade, all signs indicated a lost season resulting in a high draft pick next year. Now, however, things have changed. After a tough schedule to start the season (playing good teams without much rest and going 3-7) this Rockets team has hit a stride and is in good position to really make a statement this season. Thanks to the All-Star caliber play of PG Kyle Lowry, and Kevin Martin finally playing like the Kevin Martin we know, the Rockets recently ripped off a 7 game win streak and have won 8 of their last 10. Not only have these 2 been playing well recently, but ESPN.com NBA Analyst David Thorpe seems to think they could be one of the best backcourt duos in the leage right now:
“Kevin and Kyle are definitely in the conversation of being amongst the best. That backcourt together has a lot of strengths and they complement each other very well. I’m a huge Kyle Lowry fan and I definitely think Kyle is the best point guard Kevin has ever played with by a strong degree – might be the best player; Kevin’s never played with an All-Star before.”
The Rockets are definitely in position to continue the hot play as their next 3 games, and next 4 out of 5 in total are at home where they have only been beat twice this season. Winning on this homestand would be nice as the Rockets go on a 6 game road trip afterwards. This lockout-shortened season has quickly turned from a “tanked” season to a season where these young, gritty Rockets may just be able to thrive.
