Durant, Thunder Knock off Warriors, Despite 48 from Monta Ellis

The Oklahoma City Thunder survived a shootout with the Golden State Warriors Tuesday night. They held on for a 119-11 victory improving to 20-5 overall and 11-4 on the road.

The Warriors did not go quietly. In fact, they got off to a very impressive start, as they started the game on an 8-0 run, before point guard Russell Westbrook made a layup.

Monta Ellis played like a man possessed tonight, scoring 48 points, including 30 in the first half. That is something you don’t see every night, but Ellis is very well capable of doing that, which he showed tonight.

The Thunder also had to stave off a triple-double from forward David Lee. He finished with 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. He is the first Warriors forward to record a triple-double since Chris Webber did it in 1993.

Oklahoma City was led, once again, by Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The duo combined to score 64 points. Durant led the way with 33 while Westbrook had 31. The combined to go 25-48 shooting for the ball game, but were just 3-11 from beyond the arc.

This was a big win for the Thunder. They should beat teams like the Warriors nine times out of ten times. They have now won 8 of their last 11 games. They are just a half game out of best record in the NBA thus far this season, trailing the Chicago Bulls (21-6).

The Thunder finally got a third starter to score double figures, something that does not come often. Daequan Cook shot the lights out from 3-point land, going 5-6 and finished with 17 points. The third piece of the Thunder “big 3″ James Harden scored 19 points off the bench on 6-13 shooting.

Oklahoma City has a pretty favorable schedule over the next five games as they will play the Sacramento Kings, Utah Jazz (twice), Houston Rockets, and a rematch with the Warriors. Those five games will be played over the course of the next 10 days. I think they should come away with five wins, and keep improving as the season goes on.
