So here we are again – the trade deadline is looming and the Stars are right in the mix for the last playoff spot in the West, just on the outs. The difference this year is that the veteran players are exactly one year older and unless a miracle happens in the next few months, the window of opportunity for those veterans to win with the Stars, as well as for the Stars to win with them will get even smaller.

Brenden Morrow is now 33 and health seems to be an issue, likely from the physical style he’s played over his career. What’s he worth to us at this point in time ? He’s been an absolute warrior for us over the years but take your heart out of the equation for a second, does this team need whatever it is he has left in the tank, or whatever it is he could fetch on the trade market from a team wanting to make a push ? The answer really would lie with whatever offers are on the table in the next few weeks. Would you send him to a contender for a 1st round draft pick and a good prospect ? For the absolute good of the organization, you would have to really consider it. I’m not at all on the “Trade Morrow” bandwagon, but I’m also no longer on the “Keep him at all costs” bandwagon either.

Mike Ribeiro could be in play as well. If a team like say Toronto is looking for a center, they really could do worse. If the Stars look at dealing him though, they had better have a plan in place to replace him at least somewhat for next year either via trade or free agency, or this team will be really thin up front. Ribeiro is kind of enigmatic, at times he seems somewhat expendable and a nice piece of trade bait, at other times you see how he creates offense for the Stars and you ask yourself why the heck wouldn’t we keep this guy around ? I think he could be a part of any resurgence by this team in the next year or two, but he will be a UFA after next season just like Morrow, so the Stars really are going to have to look at the big picture where both players are concerned.

Sheldon Souray, Niklas Grossman, Stephane Robidas, and Adam Burish have also been mentioned as possible trade bait. Would unloading veterans be giving up on the season ? Maybe. Ask yourselves this though, is it better to get maximum value in return for our assets, or hang on to them and see where we’re sitting at this exact time next year ?

Either way, management really needs to have an absolute plan in place by the February 27 deadline – whether that’s trading assets then, or waiting until the off season to make moves. One thing for sure is this team cannot have the same looking roster it does now heading in to next season.
