Letting it fly…Magic hit 17 threes to cool off the Heat 102-89

It’s not often that a NBA team can shoot 42 three pointers in a game and get a win but the Orlando Magic did just that Wednesday night. The Magic defeated the Heat 102-89 powered by 17 made three pointers
Ryan Anderson continued his dream (contract) season with 27 points and 11 rebounds followed by another superhero performance from Dwight Howard who had 25 points, 24 rebounds and 4 assists.
The Heat were led by Dwyane Wade’s 33 points but the Magic were able to slow down LeBron James who tallied 17 points and 10 assists. The point total from LeBron was his second lowest scoring output this season.
LeBron commented on the loss after the game: “They shot the 3 extremely well and the big fella (Dwight Howard) in the middle took care of his 20 and 20 once again. Sometimes you have to pick your poison, but we gave up both tonight. They are an extremely tough team to beat when they are making the 3s and the big fella is doing what he wants.”
The 42 three point attempts were a team record and as obscene as it may seem the shots came within the flow of the game. Anderson said “I think when the crowd gets into it, when we have great energy as a team and we’re being really unselfish and moving the ball, it is contagious.”
The Magic offense looked as good as it has in weeks with a balanced inside and outside attack. They dominated the boards and pulled down 17 offensive rebounds to go with their 17 made threes. So often when the Magic are making it rain, Howard becomes nothing more than a glorified pick setter. Obviously Howard is more than a decoy to lure the opposing defenses into the paint for open threes. Stan Van Gundy would be wise to remember that at all times going forward.
Orlando bounced back from a tough loss on Monday to the Clippers and defeated their Southeast division rivals in this game. They now stand at 16-10 with another rivalry game on Friday night against the Atlanta Hawks.
