Mavericks Biggest X Factor

When any teams superstar is not playing up to their potential, it becomes extremely difficult for that team to be successful.  With that said, every great super star has had a sidekick to pick up the slack. Some of the NBA’s greatest have had help, for example, Jordan and Pippen, Kobe and Shaq, Duncan and Robinson, Stockton and Malone, Magic and Kareem, and the list goes on.

This year the Mavericks are suffering from just that, Dirk Nowitzki is the superstar and best player to ever put on a Mavericks’ uniform, but he needs his sidekick to be more consistent for this team to have a chance at making another championship run.  Vince Carter has been Robin to Dirks Batman, someone who can compliment and work cohesively.  Lets rewind back to the 2005-2006 season when Dallas made it to the Finals and had that heartbreaking loss to the Miami Heat.  When Josh Howard scored in double digits, the team was successful and posted a record of 36-9.  Now to the present, the Mavericks this year are 10-2 when Vinsanity scores in double digits, as Carter gets more and more acclimated with Dallas’s system his play should be more consistent. Carter is having a career year behind the arc this season, shooting over 46%.  The NBA average 3 point percentage this season is right around 34%, so Carter is well above the average and Dallas needs to get him more shots. He ranks fourth on team in shots per game at 8. Carter is playing a very similar role this season that Howard played for Dallas in the 05-06 season.

In order for Carter to get more shots, someone is going to have to limit their shot selection.  Shawn Marion would and should be the one shooting less, he is great when he can attack the basket and finish around the rim.  When it comes down to it, shooting is just not his strong point. He has proven that he can knock down a three from time to time, but lets face it there are five other players that I would rather see shooting threes.

If the Mavericks want to make it back to the Finals to defend their title they will need a bigger impact in games from Vince Carter, and I believe he is capable of stepping up and delivering.
