Wizards Update: Packing it “Lin”

After watching John Wall get torched by Knicks sensation Jeremy Lin Wednesday night, this Wizards analyst has started watching college basketball much more closely. Not that I wasn’t watching NCAA hoops before, but now, knowing one of the best players in college will soon be join the Wizards by way of a top three draft pick each college game carries more weight.
Before I go forward with yet another Wizards-trashing diatribe can I talk about Lin and his explosion onto the NBA scene? Granted it’s a very, very small sample size, but if he keeps up what he’s doing he’ll quickly become one of the most popular players in the NBA (reports are he gained 60,000 Twitter followers in five days after first becoming the Knicks starting point guard). Lin (undrafted out of Harvard in 2010) has bounced around the NBA, but if he continues to play at this high a level Knicks fans and NBA fans alike will continue to embrace him.
Wizards fans, on the other hand, have been given very little to embrace all season. With so many games crammed into such a small period of time there’s been little to no practice time for the young players to improve while the older players remain injured and less motivated as the losses have piled up.
So, with March Madness on the horizon and All Star Weekend looming, what exactly do these Wizards have to play for? It’s one thing to say: “These young guys just need more game time to develop” and an entirely different thing for the young guys to actually develop.
Does struggling through this gauntlet of a season teach John Wall how to shoot? Does playing a game every other night make JaVale McGee a smarter player? Has Andray Blatche found every fast-food restaurant in the greater Washington D.C. area by now? Answering these questions is paramount towards figuring out the future of our franchise.
At 5-21 the Wizards have the 3rd worst record in the NBA. There’s no excitement in D.C. for basketball right now, while the average fan will tell you John Wall is a bust (way too soon, people). The organization is in flux, the players are not developing; it’ll be over these next few months that the future of the franchise will be laid out.
We’ll have a high draft pick for sure, we have some young players who can develop into solid players on contending teams, but each night Wizards fans turn their TV’s off in disapointment (or don’t watch at all).
With Miami (gulp) coming to D.C. tonight (Friday, Feb. 10th) the Wiz should fall to 5-22 as they continue one of the worst seasons in franchise history. If you can stomach it watch some of their games down the stretch. Look for hustle and heart from the players that will be here in the future (Wall, Vesely, Booker).
Sadly, for now that’s all we have.
Coming Up: 5 Game Road Trip starting with Detroit Sunday, Portland Tuesday, and the Clippers Wednesday.
