PGA TOUR WHAT IT MEANS: February 14, 2012 — Pebble Beach

Here are my lasting thoughts from Pebble Beach to kick off this week’s What It Means:

1) What a round on Sunday by Phil Mickelson to win. 64? Bogey free? Absolutely unbelievable. Those two long par putts at 12 and 15 kept the momentum going and it’s great to see someone of Phil’s stature be able up a round like he did, with Tiger Woods in his group no less, especially after the disappointing year he had last year.

Now Phil has to be considered one of the favorites at Augusta, if he can keep himself interested, engaged, and mentally sharp for the four day grind that is The Masters.

2) For me what got me about Tiger’s round, besides the short putting issues was that at times he looked absolutely disinterested in the round. He said this was because of slow play and he was trying to keep himself patient, but it sure looked like something was going on in his head outside of the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-AM.

That’s something to watch as the 2012 season progresses.

3) Another large lead was lost on Sunday — this time the victim was Charlie Wi. I give him credit for playing the final 17 holes in -2, and giving himse;f a second place finish. If he can overcome, his own words, his “demons,” Charlie has the game to win on the PGA Tour.

What’s happened to him, Kyle Stanley and Spencer Levin so far this year proves how hard winning really is on the PGA Tour.
